Performs work serving as the first point of contact in the IT Infrastructure Services area for escalated requests from the IT Service Desk and providing a broad range of general systems and network administration duties. The Sys Admin is exposed to many technologies, is expected to cross-train with other Sys Admins, and participate in project work as needed.


Essential Functions:

  1. Manages and monitors all server systems, appliances, and server applications, reviews performance and resource utilization, and tunes systems to ensure maximum availability and accessibility.
  2. Installs, configures, and tests server operating systems, application software, and system management tools.
  3. Ensures the highest level of systems and infrastructure availability by monitoring server and application performance, ensuring systems and applications receive appropriate security patches and feature updates, and identifying and mitigating potential issues.
  4. Uses automation tools and develops custom scripts to increase system efficiency, automate repetitive tasks, simplify server deployment, and lower human intervention on tasks.
  5. Manages the implementation of backup policy including configuration and scheduling of backup jobs, testing the integrity of backups, and periodically reviewing backup policies with all IT stakeholders.
  6. Provides support to the IT Service Desk on issues escalated to the engineering team requiring elevated privileges or access to resolve.
  7. Recommends acquisition of tools or products to enhance system/network performance, add features, or improve service to the college user community.
  8. Acts as a liaison between the IT Department and external vendors, consultants, and suppliers to further project work and resolve problems with supported systems.
  9. Cross trains with peers in the IT Infrastructure Services department to achieve full capability in managing all applications and services supported by the department.
  10. Supports IT strategic initiatives by participating in project work and setup and testing of new systems and services.
  11. Participates in the design of server architectures to support the systems and services provided by the IT Department.
  12. Executes software and hardware upgrades as needed or during scheduled off hours, including emergency rollouts.
  13. Provides technical guidance and operational instructions to systems users.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and/or work experience*;
  • Four years’ technical experience in a systems or network administration role;
  • Proven experience with fundamental network protocols such as DNS, DHCP, and SMTP, IP routing basics and related protocols, installing and configuring Windows Server 2016+ or Linux to perform common roles such as File/Print server, domain controller, web server or database server, and server virtualization technologies such as VMware, Hyper-V and Amazon Web Services; and
  • Strong understanding and hands-on experience in systems, including networking and VMware.

*An Associate degree is equivalent to 18 months of work experience, whereas a Bachelor's degree is equivalent to four years, and a Master's degree is equivalent to 10 years.

The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally,

and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Talking 1: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Visual Acuity 3: Visual Acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

SCHEDULE : Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with occasional evenings and weekends required.
