The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of Students.

In September 2022, HKUST celebrated a new milestone in its engagement with the Mainland with the official opening of HKUST (Guangzhou). Under the “Unified HKUST, Complementary Campuses” framework, the HKUST and HKUST(Guangzhou) are transforming education for the future, with the cross-disciplinary academic structure of HKUST(Guangzhou) complementing the well-established disciplinary foundation at the HKUST Clear Water Bay campus.

Role and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Provost, the Dean of Students is an executive appointment.  The appointee is a member of the senior administrative team of the University who is expected to:

- oversee the policies, management and provision of University-wide co-curriculum enrichment programs (e.g. exchange), scholarships and financial assistance, and other non-academic services and developmental programs such as residential life experience, community engagement, personal and career development, career placement, counseling support, sports facilities and other amenities, as well as other student-centered initiatives;

- play a proactive role in effecting the goal of holistic education for both undergraduate and postgraduate, as well as local and non-local students;

- steer the development and stakeholders' receptiveness of strategies, plans and programmes for enhancing student life and promoting student intake quality and diversity;

- provide strategic leadership and vision in the areas of undergraduate recruitment and admission strategy, internationalization and cross-cultural integration; and

- provide effective coordination and facilitate active communication among student groups, departmental societies and the University.

The Candidate

Candidates should have an intimate understanding of the challenges and opportunities for education in a research-intensive university and a commitment to education as a developmental and holistic experience that encompasses a broad range of learning activities beyond academic preparation.  They should have passion and vision in student well-being and development, with exceptional expertise and knowledge in steering student related initiatives.  Individuals with a clear vision of tertiary education, substantial education and administrative experience in a university setting, the ability to manage large-scale educational programs, and a collaborative leadership style to work in partnership with Schools, academic departments and other support units are essential.  Candidates should possess excellent leadership and communication skills.  Knowledge of the local culture and education scene is desirable. Being able to communicate effectively in English, Cantonese and Putonghua would be beneficial.
