Duties and Responsibilities

The Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing ( MNSON ) seeks a dynamic, distinguished nurse scientist to serve as the Marcella Niehoff Endowed Chair for Nursing Research. The Endowed Chair will shape research development in the MNSON, foster a spirit of inquiry, and mentor others to advance funded research programs, thereby enhancing the MNSON and Loyola University Chicago’s distinction and impact.

Reporting directly to the Dean of the MNSON, the Endowed Chair is expected to support the mission and move forward the vision of the MNSON and the University, contribute to the MNSON and University goals for inclusive excellence, and serve as a model to faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and students. Specifically, the Endowed Chair is expected to:

·Maintain an active program of federally funded research as principal investigator.
·Facilitate collaborative research within the MNSON and across academic departments, and external organizations (i.e., community-based, governmental, and health care/service provision entities).
·Enhance research innovation, development, and training.
·Represent and support research excellence and the renowned reputation of the MNSON within LUC, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
·Develop strategic initiatives to recruit and retain research-intensive faculty, research teams, fellows, and doctoral students.


The successful Endowed Chair candidate will be a nationally recognized nurse scientist with a distinguished record of federal funding as principal investigator, ideally in areas aligned with one of these five research lenses included in the NINR Strategic Plan Framework:

· Health Equity : Reduce and ultimately eliminate the systemic and structural inequities that place some at an unfair, unjust, and avoidable disadvantage in attaining their full health potential
· Social Determinants of Health : Identify effective approaches to improve health and quality of life by addressing the conditions in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, and age
· Population and Community Health : Address critical health challenges at a macro level that persistently affect groups of people with shared characteristics
· Prevention and Health Promotion : Prevent disease and promote health through the continuum of prevention-from primordial to tertiary
· Systems and Models of Care : Address clinical, organizational, and policy challenges through new systems and models of care

Prior experience in mentoring early and mid-career nurse scientists and evidence of success in building collaborations are required.

To be considered, candidates must meet the University’s criteria for a tenured faculty appointment at the Professor level.

· Future plans: Describe how you plan to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the school of nursing including activities you would pursue and how they would fit into your teaching, scholarship, and service.

Programs include a BSN degree with 4 study options, a MSN degree in nursing and healthcare administration, a DNP degree with tracks for preparation in nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist roles, and a PhD in Nursing degree. Faculty engage in research to promote health equity within the context of integrated human outcome science focused on multilevel health outcomes, human experiences and mechanisms underlying health, and quality of healthcare systems.

The MNSON spans the University’s main Lake Shore Campus and Loyola’s Health Sciences Campus, which is also home to the Stritch School of Medicine, the Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health, the Graduate School’s biomedical programs, and Loyola’s health sciences research enterprise, including the 225,000-square-foot Center for Translational Research and Education.
