Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts offers a variety of programs in the liberal arts leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts in creative writing, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts in creative writing and filmmaking, and Master of Public Administration. The college also offers combined bachelor’s/master’s degree programs in Spanish and English. To implement these programs, the college provides instruction, research, and creative opportunities in the humanities, social sciences, and arts.

The 15 academic departments in the college provide courses of study in each of these areas, in addition to interdepartmental programs in Africana studies; American studies; Asian studies; classical studies; European studies; forensic science; journalism; Latin American studies; medical humanities; Middle East and Islamic studies; Native American studies; and women and gender studies. The college houses the Gender Studies and Research Center, an interdisciplinary and intersectional community of students, scholars, and advocates committed to social justice and equity.

Undergraduate certificates for professional writing and publishing, as well as post-baccalaureate certificates in conflict management and resolution, emergency and disaster management, forensic science, science and medical writing, women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, Hispanic studies, and a post-master’s certificate in liberal studies, are also offered.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Public Communication Specialist is responsible for the following duties:
  • Manages all internal and external communications and marketing for the college, from conception to execution and distribution
  • Develops all communication, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and distribution through the appropriate channels, as well as adherence to university guidelines
  • Manages the college’s marketing and communication initiatives, including the promotion of college events and the creation and distribution of the college’s e-newsletters
  • Communicates with internal and external audiences by developing content that advances the college’s goals as outlined by the strategic plans
  • Researches, writes, and edits news and feature stories for the college’s print and online publications that highlight student and faculty research, events, and awards across the college’s departments and programs
  • Manages the college’s social media platforms; creates and curates digital content
  • Writes content for departmental marketing and promotional materials, including booklets, brochures, rack cards, and banners. Collaborates with the Office of University Relations on design and photography for marketing collateral; manages projects through Printing Services (including quotes/payment/delivery)
  • Serves as the college’s liaison to the Office of University Relations and the Provost’s Marketing and Communications team, working with partners to amplify college messaging and ensure consistency and university brand integrity
  • Pitches news items, features, and profiles to OUR, Advancement, and Research for university-level promotion
  • Serves as the primary content manager for the college’s websites; edits creates, and updates content on the departments’ 160+ program pages following university branding and website guidelines
  • Writes remarks, correspondence, and presentations for the deans
  • Monitor the college’s general email accounts; respond to inquiries
  • Proofs and edits dean’s office staff communications
  • Manage Deans’ Offices and Leadership Councils’ listservs; manage colleges’ email distribution groups by working with ITS to update faculty, staff, and student email groups
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience
  • Knowledge of and experience with journalistic principles and practices, as well as standard English and grammar rules for writing and editing
  • Knowledge of graphic design and publishing software (InDesign, Photoshop, Canva, Illustrator, etc.)
  • Ability to translate complex ideas and objectives into effective communications and marketing materials that deliver the college’s mission
  • Ability to think strategically about how best to communicate with internal and external audiences, including developing appropriate content that furthers the college’s goals, analyzing and using existing communication tools, and determining the appropriate applications of Web, print, video, social media and/or other communication tools that would best address specific promotional needs
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply university style guidelines and AP style to publications
  • Ability to build positive relationships with members of the campus community and offer creative solutions to content challenges
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, be creative, operate effectively as a team member, and work under pressure with strict attention to detail
  • Ability to converse effectively and maintain contact with faculty, staff, the media, parents, alumni, students, donors, vendors, and government officials
