The incumbent oversees the daily operations of the Education Abroad department; develops administrative policies and procedures; collaborates with academic and administrative units across the university; develops and delivers education abroad programs; and, increases student participation in overseas opportunities. The incumbent also serves as campus resource to provide consultation and training for campus partners to enhance education abroad capacity and comfort. The incumbent keeps current with trends in education abroad to ensure quality of services and programs and pursues innovative strategies for continual improvement and for promoting education abroad.

Duties / Responsibilities

Education Abroad Management:
  • Oversees a variety of exchange, faculty-led, and third-party provider programs to include developing support mechanisms for program participants and leaders as well as managing relationships with partners abroad.
  • Advises faculty on education abroad guidelines, faculty-led proposal submission, and approval processes via the TerraDotta online application system.
  • Advises faculty on the following duties related to education abroad programs: pre-departure and on-site orientations; faculty budgets, overseas travel expenses, student records, and risk management guidelines.
  • Promotes best practices in education abroad curriculum design, assessment, and integration with academic programs of study.
  • Promotes and markets education abroad programs and develops approaches to increasing the diversity of its participants with an emphasis on non-traditional underrepresented and/or economically vulnerable populations.
  • Provides oversight and support for education abroad programming, including risk, health, and safety aspects. In cooperation with other campus units, coordinates health and safety projects and resources and services, including study abroad emergency preparedness and response plans.
  • Prepares education abroad program reports, including the presidential study abroad scholarship, monthly highlights, term, and annual reports.
  • Coordinates student exchange partnerships and serves as a liaison with external affiliate programs to maintain exchange balances.
  • Collaborates with CEGE departments to develop and oversee inbound student exchange services and support.
  • Serves as first responder to all emergencies or perceived crises abroad.

CSUSB Strategic Plan and CEGE Initiatives:
  • Incorporates elements of CSUSB's Strategic Plan into the operations of education abroad programs.
  • Articulates a strategic vision for education abroad and executes the vision to include comprehensive engagement, management, and training and development of education abroad staff.
  • Develops and implements an annual strategic plan for the education abroad unit.
  • Develops and implements effective education abroad policies and procedures.

Agreements:
  • Education Abroad MOUs/MOAs: Drafts agreements and addendums in tandem with CEGE associate dean.
  • Negotiates educational abroad program costs with international university partners and third-party providers, ensuring the best prices and student safety.
  • Monitors MOU/MOA expiration, initiates renewal process to reflect changes in items such as costs, dates, academics, and/or any pertinent variations from original agreement.

Staff Management:
  • Establishes goals and objectives for education abroad staff.
  • Conducts annual evaluations, advises on professional development opportunities, and promotes team-building and collaborative activities.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings and one-on one meetings with staff to discuss objectives and progress as well as to provide guidance and support.

Data Management and Technology:
  • Ensures comprehensive data management and demonstrates experience with related technologies for education abroad. Implements data-driven solutions for continuous improvement of all administrative aspects of education abroad.
  • Oversees the Terra Dotta system and conducts training for all users, including faculty, administrators, and support staff.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

Master's degree in a related field; preferably in Counseling, Communication Studies, Education, or International Studies.

Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible management-level experience in the area of education abroad within an institution of higher education; including three (3) years of supervisory experience.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of best practices in risk management, crisis response and management, conflict resolution, program development, and program assessment.
  • Skills in project management, including program design, implementation and evaluation.
  • Experience in monitoring/assessing people, processes and/or services to make improvements.
  • Experience in program marketing, recruitment, and assessment.
  • Creative expertise necessary for continued development of campus internationalization through education abroad, cultural outreach events and activities.
  • Strong organizational skills with proven ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives, and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
  • Possess and maintain a valid passport and ability to travel, domestically and internationally.
  • Ability in problem identification, reasoning, and forming solutions.
  • Ability to create and maintain positive relationships with a wide range of constituents, including faculty, students, colleagues, administrators, and institutional partners.
  • Professional verbal/written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate with tack and diplomacy and with multicultural competencies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the development of education abroad programs, student exchanges, virtual education abroad programs.
  • Active involvement with NAFSA and/or other appropriate professional associations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a language other than English
  • Experience with Terra Dotta software to manage education abroad.

Special Conditions:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid passport.
  • Must have the ability to travel, domestically and internationally.

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $7000 - $7500 per month

Classification Salary Range: $4,583 - $14,713 per month

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Position Information:

Work status: Full-time/Exempt/At-Will

Schedule: Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

This is a full-time management (MPP) position. MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

MPP: This position will remain open until filled.
