Primary Purpose

To be a primary instructor to students in the COCC Nursing Assistant (NA) and NA partnerships programs, develop curriculum, assess student learning, and provide student advising.
According to the Oregon State Board of Nursing ( OSBN ), the primary instructor must:
(a) Implement the required Board-approved curriculum;
(b) Provide effective teaching strategies in an environment that encourages student and instructor interaction;
© Supervise and be present in the classroom at least 75% of the time that classes are being taught, or for on-line programs, be available for consultation and additional clarification at least every 72 hours;
(d) Evaluate competency of students;

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide Nursing Assistant instruction (in a team-taught environment), using approved course outcome guides. Teaching assignments may be during the day (including early morning), evening, or weekend, and could include credit and non-credit classes taught at any of the College campuses, St. Charles Hospitals in Bend, Redmond, Madras, or Prineville, Ridgeview High School in Redmond, or other clinical locations in Central Oregon.
  • Provide instruction (online and/or in-person lecture; in-person lab and clinical, with some labs and/or clinicals offered on evening and weekends) for NA-1 and CNA -2 certifications. Nursing Assistant faculty teach professional course work, lead student discussions, select appropriate laboratory and clinical learning experiences, and evaluate student performance (in on-line, classroom, laboratory and clinical settings), following OSBN approved curriculum. Lecture may also be synchronous remote lecture via Zoom or similar platform. For on-line instruction, instructor must be available for consultation and clarification at least every 72 hours.
  • Provide student advising and assistance in areas of course selection, career planning, job placement and employment follow-up.
  • Hold at least five scheduled office hours per week for student help sessions and program assistance.
  • Participate in department meetings, curriculum revision, course assessment, program assessment, and program review.
  • Engage in regular professional growth activities, remain current in the field, and maintain current credentials or licensures as required by the program.
  • Perform other essential job functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
  • Participate in service to the college. This may include participating in College committees, taskforces, peer teams, or other activities.
  • Provide meaningful, professional service to the community, businesses, public agencies, and other organizations.

  • Thorough knowledge in the field of taught discipline and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
  • Ability to adapt and use a variety of teaching and assessment techniques including the use of technology to enhance student success.
  • Ability to observe, direct, and oversee students ensuring safety in the classroom or laboratory.
  • Ability to work with and present various curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft office suite, various course management systems, technology to teach traditional, hybrid, remote, or online courses and other technology used in the instruction setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members.
  • Ability to provide services to students in a manner which does not discriminate as to race, creed, religion, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, sexual preference or marital status.
  • Willingness to travel and or teach at various hours and campus or community partner locations, as required.

Ergonomic Requirements

Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Individuals in the Nursing Department must be able to perform additional essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation according to ADA Standards without risking injury to self or others, or threatening the safety of clients, or to otherwise provide appropriate documentation how they can perform all essential functions as listed when ability is in question:
  • Strength and mobility sufficient to assist with practicum learning and client care activities.
  • Physical endurance sufficient to complete assigned periods of instruction, e.g. 5, 8, 10, and/or 12 hours shifts on days or evenings.
  • Cognitive ability to collect, analyze, and integrate information and knowledge to make clinical judgments and client management decisions that promote patient safety and student success.

Individuals in the Nursing Department may be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials in the practicum settings. All college employees who have been identified as having the potential for this exposure are required to complete a hepatitis B vaccination series. Individuals in the Nursing Department also must meet Oregon Health Authority’s other immunization and screening requirements (TB Blood Test and drug screen) for clinical placement.

Individuals in the Nursing Department are recommended to be fully vaccinated against COVID – 19, including booster vaccinations. Declinations are possible. Any accommodations stipulated by clinical partners must be followed (e.g. wearing a mask or periodic testing). The Nursing Department curriculum does follow CDC guidelines regarding immunizations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate degree in Nursing – RN (Does not require a BSN or MSN ).

Services (nursing home/rehabilitation center or skilled nursing facility; residential care; or
assisted living).
  • One (1) year of experience teaching adults, or evidence of completion of a course on teaching adults.

  • Current, unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in Oregon.

  • Be approved as a Primary Instructor for minimum of CNA1 and possibly CNA2 by the OSBN . Must have approval prior to official hiring.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support ( BLS ) certification.

  • One (1) year of nursing experience in an acute care facility.
  • One (1) year experience using an electronic learning management system ( LMS ) such as Blackboard or Canvas.
