Vice President for Marketing and Communications


Case Western Reserve University, one of the nation's leading research universities,seeks an accomplished, collaborative, and visionary leader to serve as Vice President for Marketing and Communications. The vice president reports to President Eric W. Kaler and is a member of the president's senior leadership team that is focused on advancing President Kaler's three strategic priorities: elevating academic excellence, expanding research, and enhancing community engagement and impact. The vice president will join a university that prides itself on thinking BIG and will be encouraged to think outside of the conventions of traditional higher education marketing to expand the university's global reach and reputation.

Located in Cleveland, Ohio, Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is an independent private research institution holding membership in the elite Association of American Universities (AAU). It is ranked among the most prestigious institutions in the world for its academic, research, and commercial success. CWRU's 267-acre campus is located in the heart of Cleveland's University Circle, a square-mile urban district of cultural, medical, educational, religious, and social service institutions, and is just minutes from Cleveland's downtown.

The vice president leads a team of three associate vice presidents, an executive director, a director, and an administrative assistant. They oversee the centralized University Marketing and Communications (UMC) teamcomprised of talented and committed staff responsible for telling the university's stories with a rich and authentic voice and representing the CWRU brand. The vice president facilitates collaboration with approximately 15 marketing and communications staff members in distributed academic and/or administrative units. The vice president will promote the university's mission and preserve its standing as an international leader in education and research. In addition, the vice president will create a unified vision for communications and marketing that delivers powerful and cohesive messaging and storytelling, enhances the brand, and furthers the goals of the entire university, including its individual colleges and administrative units as well as campuses and locations worldwide.

The vice president and internal communication managers will proactively meet with clients to forecast for and set strategic priorities for each unit daily, cyclically, and so on. The vice president and manager will also meet regularly with clients to ensure that products and deliverables are in line with service partnership agreements and unanticipated needs related to optimizing earned media, promotion of faculty research, reputational risk management, and other unanticipated needs. This coordinated team will work collaboratively achieving the university's priorities while celebrating and highlighting the uniqueness of each unit's needs. Through this collaborative relationship, the vice president and UMC team will increase CWRU's brand stature and global awareness worldwide.

The vice president will represent the university's commitment to the transformative power of education, promote equity and inclusion, and support an environment of belonging. They will be a relationship-oriented leader with strong interpersonal skills and self-awareness. Candidates must have 10 or more years of senior leadership experience in marketing and communications, preferably in a higher education setting.
