The Department of Medicine is seeking aSenior Clinical Nurse Supervisor who will be responsible for the direct oversight of all registered nurses employed by Johns Hopkins University. The Clinical Nurse Supervisor works directly with the Sr. Administrative Manager and Senior Clinical Nurses to develop, implement and manage standards of care of physician practices within the division. The Nurse Supervisor is responsible for recruitment and training of nursing staff, monitoring competencies, and oversight of staff development and annual reviews. The Nurse Supervisor ensures that nursing staff receive relevant education and communicates division goals and metrics. The Nurse Supervisor evaluates systems through which patient care is delivered. The Clinical Nurse Supervisor is responsible for nursing practice standards, regulatory compliance and performance improvement activities of the clinic operation.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Defines and maintains patient care and nursing practice standards to meet the needs of the various service lines within the division.
    • Maintain current knowledge of Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) Patient Care Protocols and Procedures that apply to ambulatory clinic practices.
    • Monitor updates to Hopkins Policies Online (e.g., Ambulatory Outpatient Policies and Protocols, Interdisciplinary Clinical Practice Manual, Nursing Practice and Organization Manual, Medical Nursing Standards of Care Manual).
    • Complete routine assessments of the registered nursing staff and re-educate staff as needed.
    • Assure appropriate documentation for nursing services provided to patients.
  • Directly supervises registered nurses employed by the Division.
    • Recruit and hire employees working through Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and/or JHH Human Resources departments.
    • Orient and train new staff to the electronic clinical systems, policies, and procedures of the ambulatory operation.
    • Develop staff through performance counseling and providing ongoing educational opportunities for skills training or professional growth.
    • Ensure that staff completes annual updates and competency assessments.
    • Conduct performance appraisals utilizing applicable JHU and JHH performance management tools.
    • Conduct progressive employee disciplinary activity as needed.
    • Maintain active employee HR files in accordance with JHU, JHH, and JCAHO requirements.
  • Manages schedules of registered nurses to ensure all clinical services lines have adequate support.
    • Oversight and approval for time away requests.
    • Completion of monthly E210 for all employee.
    • Implements and enforces coverage protocols.
    • Works with the Administrative Supervisor to cross reference time off requests with Medical Office Coordinators.
    • Manages coverage for unexpected absences ensuring patient care is not disrupted.
  • Along with the Nurse Manager, reviews and updates Epic Workflows to maximize efficiency across the division and standardize internal clinical communication. Responsible for acting as an Epic Super User and educating nurses and physicians on Epic Updates and best practices.
  • Develops and analyzes performance metrics to evaluate employee performance and adjust staffing as needed.
    • Works with the Administrative Supervisor to evaluate patient panels, incoming and outgoing patient communications, and required support for physician practices.
    • Analyzes practice efficiency and offers guidance when needed to all practice members including physicians.
    • Leads practice review and improvement meetings working with clinical teams to overcome challenges and deliver excellent patient care.
  • Participates in forums representing the clinic/department perspective.
    • Attend weekly meetings including GI Leadership meeting and weekly GI Huddle.
    • Lead monthly RN and Senior RN meetings.
  • Enhances own professional growth in the areas of medical practice management, performance improvement, employee management principles and health care trends.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline preferred. Three (3) years of progressive clinical nursing experience.Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Seven (7) years of progressive clinical nursing experience
  • Two (2) years of direct patient care experience
  • Two (2) years of specialized experience in Gastroenterology

  • Leadership abilities to plan organize and direct the activities of individuals and groups.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s) and hand-eye coordination. Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

Working Conditions: Possible exposure to communicable diseases.

Supervisory Responsibility: Directly supervises nineteen (19) Registered Nurses employed by the Division.
