The Office of University Marketing and Communications serves as a central hub for messaging and brand management. We collaborate, create, lead, and consult in support of the University’s mission and goals. As the University’s central marketing and communications office, our integrated team works to raise awareness about the University and strengthen Rochester’s reputation as one of the world’s leading academic and research institutions.

The Office of University Marketing and Communications is seeking an Associate Vice President of Public Relations. This newly created role is responsible for the development of a proactive media program that amplifies the impact of the University. The Associate Vice President of Public Relations leads a small team of professional communicators and works collaboratively with senior leaders to advance the University's public relations objectives. In addition, this role develops the issue management framework and leads response planning and execution.

Key responsibilities and areas of focus for the Associate Vice President of Public Relations include:   

Media Relations Strategy

  • Develop and execute proactive media relations initiatives aligned with institutional mission and strategic priorities.

Content Creation

  • Oversee the development of compelling content, including media alerts, op-eds, speeches, etc., to effectively communicate key messages.

Issues Management and Crisis Communications

  • Develop and implement an issue management framework for swift crisis response to protect the institution's reputation and community well-being.

Presidential and Executive Communications

  • Collaborate with the President's staff to enhance the University’s reputation and support University objectives through effective communication strategies.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Foster relationships with internal and external stakeholders to streamline media relations efforts and advance University interests and partnerships.

Leadership and Management

  • Lead and support a high-performance PR team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence. Provide supervision, coaching, and management of PR staff, ensuring efficient teamwork and addressing personnel matters.

The ideal candidate for the Associate Vice President of Public Relations will bring over 10 years of extensive, senior-level media relations experience. This individual will exemplify team-player and collaborative skill sets, possess sophisticated thinking abilities, and demonstrate the highest levels of proficiency in issues management and crisis communications. The ideal candidate will be very comfortable working in a fast paced, highly matrixed environment. 

Experience in higher education is highly desired/preferred. Candidates will also need to demonstrate their ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and discretion when dealing with sensitive information.
