DEAN, SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH

The West Virginia University (WVU) School of Public Health seeks a visionary, dynamic, and innovative leader to serve as Dean. The School of Public Health is part of the WVU Health Sciences Center which includes the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine (including School of Medicine Health Professions), Nursing, and Pharmacy.

The WVU School of Public Health is fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health and, as the only fully accredited public health school in the state, is home to undergraduate and graduate programs in various public health disciplines at the BS, MPH, MHA, MS and PhD levels, as well as certificate programs.

The West Virginia University School of Public Health is dedicated to tackling critical public health issues facing the citizens of West Virginia and the Appalachian region.

The Dean will establish the strategic direction for the School of Public Health and has responsibility for all students, faculty, and staff within the school. Duties of the Dean include management and coordination of the school and for implementing its plans, programs, services, and scholarly and research endeavors. Leading the academic, research, and public service programs; budget and resource allocation; fund raising and external development; and representation of the school to various constituencies impacting West Virginia University at the local, regional, national, and global levels are key responsibilities.

As an inspiring leader, the Dean will work to promote mentoring and development of faculty, staff, and students. The Dean will foster an inclusive and diverse culture across the school. The Dean will successfully leverage existing collaborative opportunities within the Health Sciences Center and across the University, while developing opportunities to expand internal and external partnerships. As a champion of the school, the Dean will facilitate relationships linking the work of the school’s faculty and students to other disciplines, communities, and interests within and outside of the school, including departments of health, healthcare organizations and providers, business entities and governmental agencies, among others is a high priority. The Dean, as the chief administrative officer and academic leader of the school, reports directly to the Chancellor and Executive Dean for Health Sciences and to the University’s Provost.

Qualifications :
  • Candidates must hold a terminal degree in public health or a closely related discipline with successful leadership in public health, health or a clinical doctorate (such as, but not limited to MD, DO, or DNP) and a Master's degree in public health or a closely related discipline.
  • Ten or more years of substantial and sequential administrative experience in higher education with five or more years of experience in senior administrative leadership relevant to public health, education, and research including financial oversight of significant programs.
  • Demonstration of successful fiscal and personnel management is expected, as well as creative, innovative program development. A commitment to mentoring and career development of faculty and staff as well as dedication to a culture of creativity, community building and partnership is essential.
  • Additional qualifications include a proven record of competitive, externally funded, nationally recognized research as a principal investigator. Proven record of recruitment, teaching and mentoring of students at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels, commitment to growth of innovative educational programs, expertise with trainee and faculty recruiting and retention, and demonstration of transparent leadership, cross-disciplinary team building, and contribution to institutional growth are required.
  • Preferred applicants will have academic credentials that merit appointment as a full Professor with tenure.
