Position Description

Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University, located in St. Davids, PA, invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of New Testament to begin August 2024. The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and the formation of students for ministry within and beyond the church. Teaching responsibilities include core and elective courses in New Testament and biblical exegesis, primarily at the graduate level (both on-ground and online). The professor should expect to teach at least one course on the undergraduate level annually. Commitment to Christian faith and participation in the life of the church are marks of Palmer’s faculty. Candidates that are members of, or ordained in, or with formal education in the United Methodist Church are especially encouraged to apply.

Secondary areas of research specialty might include, but are not limited to: politics, race, ethnicity, gender, class, ecology, literature, art, and aesthetics.

Position Responsibilities

  1. Teaching: Twenty-four credit course load per academic year in on-ground and online modalities. Use of the university’s designated online course management system is required. Participate in curriculum revision and development, as needed.
  2. Scholarship: Maintain an active research program. Attend to ways the research contributes to preparing faith-based leaders and aligns with the mission of the university.
  3. Service: Perform service to the department, seminary, and university, such as active participation on institutional committees.
  4. Professional Development: Participate in professional development workshops.
  5. Advise and Mentor Students: Participate in the academic advising of Seminary students, particularly United Methodist students. Mentor students in research. Hold regular office hours.
  6. Administrative: Serve as Seminary liaison with the United Methodist Senate and coordinate special gatherings for United Methodist Students.


  1. Ph.D. in Religion, Theology, or related field with a concentration in biblical studies or Ph.D. in New Testament required. ABD candidates will be considered if the degree is completed by August 2024.
  2. Excellence in graduate-level teaching with an ability to lead students in exploring both theoretical and practical dimensions of the discipline.
  3. Understanding how the biblical message addresses contemporary issues in church and society.
  4. Competence in using technology for teaching.
  5. Competence and vision for teaching a diverse student body. The ability to speak and teach in Spanish is desirable but not necessary.
  6. Experience in the life and ministry of the church.
  7. Experience in teaching online.
  8. Demonstrates potential for excellence in scholarly research.
  9. Supports the mission of Palmer Theological Seminary: the whole gospel for the whole world through whole persons.
