Summary/Objective

The Dialogue and Diversity Programming Community Director is housed in the Center for Diversity & Inclusion and Housing and Residence Life (HRL). This is a live-in position that is responsible for managing all aspects of Black Affinity Housing and broad-based campus wide multi-week inter- & intragroup dialogue program. This position directly oversees the day-to-day operation of the residential area including supervising one part-time Assistant Community Director 18-20 student staff, conflict mediation, hall initiatives/activities and facilities operation. The incumbent provides judicial services as a hearing officer in violations of the Student Code of Conduct regarding the housing policies and helps enforce these policies. This position provides on-call emergency coverage after hours for the resident population. The Dialogue and Diversity Programming Community Director also serves as an advisor and guides educational programming for residents as needed.

Essential Functions

Project Management

  1. Crafting timely and relevant dialogue topics, building faculty partnerships, facilitator recruitment and support, and playing a leadership role in the unit’s strategic development.
  2. Design programs based on student needs and campus climate, and (inter)national news.
  3. Cross-campus collaborations
  4. Guide educational affinity programming


Supervision/Collaboration

  1. Supervision of two Residential Assistant, 12-15 Dialogue Facilitators, Assistant Community Director and student assistant.
  2. Provide direct supervision and day-to-day practical training and coaching for student workers and Resident Assistant.
  3. Participate in weekly team meetings with student staff, CDI and Housing & Residential Life, other administrative units, and various committees to support the function


Administrative Support

  1. Support opening and closing residence halls, department events, and support large-scale residential programs.
  2. Assist with department purchases, coordinate department calendar and administrative activities including health and safety inspections, administration of residential living agreements, room inventory forms and occupancy verifications.
  3. Project support for identified HRL initiatives.
  4. Oversee day to day operations for the residential community desk during the academic year. Recruit, hire and supervise desk coordinator and desk receptionists. Assist in the implementation and training for student staff during fall and winter training programs.

Educational Programming

  1. Develop community building initiatives & support programs for Black affinity-based groups.
  2. Manage a range of educational programs and activities to raise the campus community’s cultural competency and awareness about race, ethnicity, religion, ability, age, socioeconomic class, and orientation gender identity/expression.
  3. Responsible for data collection, evaluation, and compiling department reports.
  4. Evaluates and assesses resident’s experience, trainings, workshops, and CDI resource bank. To make recommendations to the Directors for program improvement.
  5. Track and forecast training, workshop, and programmatic attendance and scale.
  6. Coordinates marketing and communication efforts for portfolio.
  7. Develop program content, and work in close partnership with other CDI and HRL staff to create affinity housing events, workshops and trainings that highlights Black and intersecting identities.
  8. Support CDI and HRL on a range of educational activities to include training programs and special programs (Admissions programs, end of year celebrations, and alumni events), contribute to the design and development of new programs to meet changing demographics needs, and facilitate educational workshops and trainings as needed


On-Call Emergency Response/ After Hours Responsibilities

  1. Provide on-call emergency coverage after hours for the resident population.
  2. Respond to a variety of student needs and coordinate response network within the department, as well as with other university departments.
  3. Provide assistance with after hours and weekend room assignment, staff selection, and staff training program

Student Outreach & Advising

  1. Advise students on academic, social and personal development to include referrals and follow up to appropriate campus services and programs.
  2. Advising includes empowering students to create a campus culture that values all students and their differences in race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, ability, age and socioeconomic class.
  3. Proactively meets regularly with individual students and groups of students to ensure CDI is addressing changing campus climate needs.
  4. Serve as an advisor to the Hall Council in the assigned area. Attend and assist with Hall Council executive and general meetings. Regularly meet with Hall Council executives for planning. Manage Hall Council budget. Approve funding requests

  • Experience working with college students and a demonstrated ability to relate to students, parents, and the public.
  • Knowledge of college student development theory and student transition issues and demonstrated ability to use this knowledge.
  • Demonstrated event planning skills with attention to detail, strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Well-developed written, speaking, organizational, time management, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Working familiarity with Microsoft Office, Excel, Access, Word, Power Point, and Dreamweaver.
