Assistant Director of Transfer Orientation and Student Engagement

Primary Purpose:
Reporting to the Associate Director for Orientation & Student Engagement, the Assistant Director of Transfer Orientation and Student Engagement leads the benchmarking research on best practices in Orientation and Welcome Week (WOW) programming and presents solutions to leadership, provides support in the planning, coordination, and implementation of the unit's programs, including weeks of welcome, student development and leadership, student engagement, and orientation. The Assistant Director is also responsible for oversight, development, and evaluation of Orientation student staff.

The Assistant Director for Transfer Student Orientation and Student Engagement is responsible for planning and executing developmental programming and resources for transfer students to promote their transition, persistence and success. This position will create and develop leadership positions for students to mentor and support transfer students as well as build connections across campus to advance transfer student support.

Essential Functions:
Orientation
  • Coordinates logistics for Fall and Spring Orientation. Delivers high profile, forward facing student transition and engagement programming in collaboration with university stakeholders using appropriate office technologies and student information systems.
  • Manages and supervises student staff including but not limited to: Scheduling, managing, and approval of timesheets for student employees; On-boarding and training student staff in accordance with Division and University policy; Evaluating student staff and providing formative and summative feedback; communicates concerns about performance in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates with Division staff to deliver the online and face to face developmental education of students with modules and trainings to ensure compliance with University, federal, and state requirements including but not limited to alcohol and drug prevention; Title IX education, use of University technologies, and resources.
  • Implement assessment on student engagement and transition programs to ensure they effectively prepare students for the progressive, diverse, intercultural learning environment of the University. Disaggregate assessment data for reporting and future programming purposes.
  • Assists with the management and updating of the unit’s internal and external communications such as social media and websites.



Supporting Living Learning Communities and Student Engagement
  • Coordinates the implementation and expansion of living learning community programs within the residential system, particularly the transfer living learning community.
  • Coordinates and implements the learning community assessment and evaluation program, working directly with the Area Coordinators and the Director of Residential Life.
  • Establishes, measures, and interprets outcomes related to learning community goals.
  • Works directly with Academic Affairs and Student Life departments to refine existing programs and develop new programs.
  • In coordination with Area Coordinators, plan and implement Living Learning Communities programs and field trips with the faculty and staff working with the learning community programs to promote academic success and community development for first year students.
  • Publishes a semester calendar of events for students, faculty and staff working with the Living Learning Communities program.
  • Coordinates the annual recognition awards ceremony for the Living Learning Communities program involving students, faculty and staff.
  • Coordinates the annual Living Learning Community Retreat.
  • Works collaboratively to promote Living Learning Community program with printed publications, website, recruitment events and social media.

Supporting Transfer Students Experiences
  • Provides year-round programming, communication, and events for Transfer Students to increase students’ sense of belonging and awareness of campus resources.
  • Plan and execute transfer orientation, parent/family orientation, transfer-specific welcome weekend activities, and year-long parent/family programming.
  • Collaborates with the Pacific Admissions team to be knowledgeable in the recruitment and admission practices and processes in order to assist potential and incoming transfers.
  • Overlooks Transfer Connection Space and collaborates with the Transfer Living Learning Community within Residence Life & Housing.
  • Creates and develops leadership opportunities for students to mentor and support incoming transfer students.
  • Participates in ongoing research and education on best practices in transfer (and related student populations, e.g. veterans, non-traditional) student success and shares this knowledge with the Pacific campuses.
  • Collaborates with departments to create identity affinity groups for transfer students.
  • Coordinates academic and social support assistance programs for first year students.
  • Support the common book experience.
  • Serves on various Student Life and University committees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

This position serves as Campus Security Authority (CSA) as outlined by the Clery Act. CSAs have federally mandated responsibilities to report crimes that are reported to them.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree completed upon the first day of work.
  • One (1) year of related experience planning and executing events or programs.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience working in student involvement and transition programs.
  • Conversational bilingual ability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Solid organizational skills and proven customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with use of computer and phone. Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment during standard business hours, with weekend and after-hours required for department, division and University events. May be exposed to an outside environment for programming and special events. Some travel may be required including to other campuses and attending relevant conferences or other professional development sessions.

Valid driver’s license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University’s fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.

Hiring Range: $66,560 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
