Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Assistant Director of Religious & Spiritual Life will provide a transformative liberal arts education for intellectually curious students in a collaborative, academically vibrant residential community that values a diverse world. The Assistant Director is responsible for developing and facilitating interfaith initiatives for the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life.

Essential Functions
  • Collaborate with and advise (both formally and informally) religiously affiliated student groups including, but not limited to Wheaton Hillel, Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship, the Muslim Students Association, Interfaith House, the South Asian Students Initiative, and Newman Catholic Student Association student groups to implement and promote celebrations for religious holidays including, but not limited to Eid, Diwali, Dia de los Muertos, Hanukkah, Passover, Easter, and Holi
  • Respond to campus and community bias events with compassionate educational dialogue and/or awareness programs as needed; plan, market, and execute community vigils/memorials/pastoral events as needed in response to local, national, or international events; Plan vigils and other crisis response for the community following campus, national and/or global tragedies to help participants to mourn and process them, including one to mark the anniversary of 9/11and Holocaust Day of Remembrance
  • Plan, execute, market, and assess programs that foster religious literacy and facilitate interfaith dialogue. Coordinate, develop, facilitate, and assess programs that center on religious and spiritual wellness. Provide program support for major campus programs in conjunction with the Student Activities staff and spiritual wellness initiatives with Residence Life
  • Supervise the Interfaith Engagement Intern and the broader work of the Interfaith Council and Interfaith House to establish and convene an interfaith council of student leaders from different faith and spiritual traditions. With the help of the Interfaith Engagement Coordinator, students in the council should collaborate to identify disparities in interfaith education on campus and plan events to address the same. This may include holding campus-wide discussions, inviting guest speakers, and organizing informal mixers between and beyond different faith groups on campus; and assess programs; Collaborate with the interfaith student intern to develop and implement 1-2 anti-bias and/or “icons” workshops per semester. The workshops should promote interfaith literacy, interfaith dialogue, the exploration of campus members’ own spirituality and values, and challenge religion-based discrimination; and assess programs; notify the campus each semester about the Interfaith Calendar, and working with other college operations (ie. Dining and Housing) to ensure religious accommodations are met when possible
  • Collaborate with campus constituents including but not limited to Counseling and Health, Athletics and Recreation, Academic Advising, Global Education, Student Activities, the Center for Social Justice and Community Impact, etc. pursuant to the goals of religious and spiritual wellness
  • Represent RSL on various committees; such as DEAL Education & Programming, the Hybrid and Remote Learning Resources Team, the Wellness Committee, etc; partnership with local religious institutions and leadership
  • Other Duties – Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree | Religious Studies/Religion/Ministry preferred
Level of Experience: 1 – 3 years
Demonstrable knowledge of the major world religions, Abrahamic and non-Abrahamic, and familiarity with contemporary approaches to spiritual life is required
Demonstrated experience engaging with diverse religious communities is required
Excellent written and verbal communication skills is required
Strong problem-solving skills are required

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree | Religious Studies/Religion/Ministry
Have high social and emotional intelligence
Have the ability to meet deadlines and self-motivate, as well as the willingness to take initiative
Having a sense of humor and flexibility would be helpful

When determining and establishing hiring rates or recruitment ranges for a position, the College considers a number of factors including the budget for the position, the range of the grade, the external market for the position or similar positions, level and scope of responsibilities, required education, skills and relevant experience as well as internal equity. All salary offers must have the prior approval of the Office of Human Resources.

The salary for this position will be commensurate with the qualifications, education and experience.
