About the Opportunity

CRRJ, founded in 2007, is the pioneer and premier academic program that examines current racial inequities through the lens of history and seeks creative reparative justice. CRRJ investigates, publicizes, and remediates cases of racial homicides during the period of 1930 and 1954. The CRRJ project is unique in its combination of rigorous research and engagement by community members that have been impacted by racial violence, both directly and indirectly. In 2022, CRRJ launched a publicly available digital archive of almost 1,000 cases of racial violence in the Jim Crow South. Work on the archives is continuing through the examination of records from the eight states that bordered the eleven states of the confederacy.

To effectively reframe this history as a narrative that is causally linked to current harms of exclusion, marginalization, and inequality, communities must address the wrongs, identify their needs, meet their responsibilities and obligations, and grapple with what the history teaches about root causes. We seek to expand our work with historically harmed communities by providing them meaningful access to the archive, highlighting community-based research and vernacular knowledge production. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to utilize the Burnham-Nobles Archive and interact with scholars, journalists and others who are focusing on historical racism in the US and seeking avenues for redress.

CRRJ/CLEAR, through the fellowship, seeks to provide an opportunity to a community activist/organizer/member to undertake the following activities:

1. Build a project of their choosing based on the Burnham-Nobles Digital Archive;

2. Design, manage, and execute CRRJ's community-based programs associated with the history that is the subject of the Archive, including convenings, educational programming in the humanities and arts, exhibitions. Such community-based projects include renaming streets to memorialize victims of racial terror killings; promoting visual, literary and musical art; engaging public officials; and hosting commemorative events on the anniversaries of these atrocities.

3. Promote strong collaborative relations with CRRJ's non-academic partner organizations.

4. Engage in such other activities that may be appropriate to support the restorative justice work of CRRJ and CLEAR.

This is a full-time, in residence, US based one-year position supported by an external grant to the Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project (CRRJ) of the Center for Law, Equity and Race (CLEAR), at Northeastern University School of Law. The Community Leadership Fellow will be expected to attend meetings and events at Northeastern University in Boston.


Required Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in any field or area of study, such as Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts.
  • Proven track record of at least five years of anti-racist and social justice work and activities at the local, state, or national level, demonstrating the ability to engage and collaborate with community members on different levels. i
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, as well as the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively across all levels of the organization

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficient in developing plans with clear goals and objectives, conducting research, and writing reports.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to organize time and priorities, including multiple tasks and deadline pressures.
  • Prior experience with the national civil rights story and demonstrated interest in civil rights, criminal justice, American history.
  • Experience working in community development or social justice nonprofit environment

  • Program Design: Design, manage and execute CRRJ's community-based programs associated with the Archive.
  • Community Meetings: Participate in relevant community and academic meetings; convene meetings with community partners; support community-based programming
  • Collaboration: Develop and promote strong collaborative relations with CRRJ's non-academic partner organizations.
  • Reporting: Prepare final report on project and make a community presentation.
  • Project Planning: Prepare a written workplan for the individual project to be completed during the fellowship period utilizing the Burnham-Nobles Archive. Identify the types of resources needed for implementation of the project.
