REPORTS TO: West Regional Extension Director

LOCATION: Bowling Green, KY

EFFECTIVE DATE: Position will remain open until filled



PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: The Extension Associate position in Forestry and Natural Resources in the Kentucky State University (KSU) Land Grant Program and College of Agriculture, Community and the Sciences will support Cooperative Extension programs throughout Kentucky focusing on forest health, agroforestry, pollinator habitat, and related natural resources issues.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The Extension Associate will support existing Cooperative Extension programming and collaborate with program staff to identify and address additional needs throughout Kentucky. KSU’s Forestry and Natural Resources program goals are to provide: 1) applied solutions to planning and implementation issues and 2) training to landowners, technical guidance professionals, professional service providers, and others engaged in planning, implementation, and maintenance activities for forest health, agroforestry, pollinator habitat, and related natural resources activities. This position will address these goals through training and education programs, technical guidance to state-wide audiences, developing collaborative demonstration practices, and creating Extension communications through written and video formats.


1. Support and develop Cooperative Extension programs and publications for audiences throughout Kentucky.

2. Plan and implement land management and agroforestry demonstration practices.

3. Provide technical guidance to stakeholders and partners throughout Kentucky.

4. Train, supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the program.

5. Safely and efficiently operate pickup trucks while pulling trailers and safely operate other university vehicles.

6. Professionally represent KSU and the Forestry and Natural Resources program during public meetings, events, and other meetings.

7. Travel to project sites and meetings statewide, as needed.

8. Other related duties as assigned.

OTHER DUTIES: The position will conduct other duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS: Master's in Wildlife Management, Forestry, or related natural areas management or natural resources field required. 1 to 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified preferred.

LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS: Must acquire pesticide applicator and FAA drone licenses.


• Experience with and ability to implement natural areas management, wildlife habitat management, or land management practices in an outdoor setting.

• Experience training audiences of all age groups and experience levels.

• Knowledge of NRCS EQIP practices.

• Ability to establish and maintain a positive work environment and effective working relationships.

• Ability to travel statewide on a regular basis.

• Experience with public speaking and writing.

• Initiative, resourcefulness, punctuality, and ability to work independently and with a team are essential.

• Ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions for multiple hours at a time.

• Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.

• Valid driver’s license.


• Work will frequently involve exposure to outdoor and indoor conditions. This could involve exposure to unusual elements such as high and low temperatures, rain, snow, dirt, pollen, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, fuel, herbicides, and/or loud noises.

• Work will involve responsible use of power tools, mechanical equipment, and herbicides.

• Work will involve exposure to poisonous plants, stinging insects, ticks, snakes, and similar wildlife.

• Requires standing, walking, and hiking in cold, hot, wet, and dry conditions in difficult terrain.

• Requires working in an office setting for multiple hours at a time.

• No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

• Frequent travel during work hours and occasionally overnight travel within Kentucky required.
