EMPLOYMENT STATUS: 9 Month (Non-Tenured Track)
EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: The Adjunct Professor of Elementary or Secondary Education in the School of Education, Human Development, and Consumer Sciences is a 9-month non-tenure-track position at Kentucky State University. The successful candidate will have a degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in education with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the areas of elementary or secondary education. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the area of elementary or secondary education. The adjunct will also participate in curriculum development, and mentor students in research projects, and service-related duties as assigned. A strong commitment to diversity is essential.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The Adjunct professor is a 9-month non-tenure-track position at Kentucky State University. The successful candidate will have a degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in elementary or secondary education with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in elementary or secondary education, or a similar field. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses and possibly some graduate courses, participate in curriculum development, mentor students in research projects, and service-related duties as assigned. Instruction may include the area of elementary education but may include instruction in secondary education or special education courses. A strong commitment to diversity is essential. Priority will be given to candidates with proven prior university teaching experience implementing cutting-edge instructional technologies to promote student problem-solving skills within campus laboratory and Blackboard distance learning environments. The position must maintain current instructional certifications appropriate to the field or discipline. The successful candidate is expected to help recruit potential students, collaborate with colleagues, assist in curriculum development, and support the HBCU mission.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses, in the area of elementary education, but may include instruction in secondary education or master of special education courses.
- Provide effective individual, small group, or whole class instruction, using a variety of techniques, as appropriate for assignment and instructional mode;
- Develop appropriate course materials, such as assignments, activities, and assessments to meet course objectives and program standards
- Prepare syllabus and paperwork in accordance with department standards and campus requirements;
- Evaluate student work, assign grades, and maintain grading records
- Develop an online learning platform via Blackboard that meets university standards for each course to meet the needs of our students
- Be willing to participate in the online teacher training platform, ACUE
- The position must maintain current instructional certifications appropriate to the field or discipline.
- Assist in mentoring of students.
- Participate in curriculum development and review.
- Serve on committees for professional associations.
- Mentor students engaged in applied research projects.
- Although this is primarily a teaching position, the candidate may develop research proposals, conduct some research, analyze research results, and publish results in the area of Education.
- Other related duties/responsibilities as assigned by the Chair or Dean
- The position will conduct other duties as required.
Licensing and Certifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
- Experience teaching students in a college or university setting
- Experience teaching students in a K-12 setting
- Excellent computer skills, including experience teaching online.
- Ability to work effectively with students of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Experience with multiple approaches to teaching and learning, such as incorporating a variety of technologies into the classroom, teaching online or hybrid classes, or using other innovative techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to a variety of teaching situations, including a wide range of student preparedness, backgrounds, and life experiences.
- Ability to work effectively with supervisors, colleagues, staff and students as part of an educational team.
- A strong commitment to diversity is essential.
- Experience with instructing special education students in a collaborating classroom
- Excellent verbal, listening, problem-solving, critical thinking, team, leadership and writing skills.
- Proven prior university teaching experience implementing cutting-edge instructional technologies to promote student problem solving skills within campus laboratory and Blackboard distance learning environments.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in the university setting.
- Ability to work under deadlines.
- Basic office and classroom activities.
