The MMET Department at Oregon Institute of Technology seeks applicants for the position of Department Chair, which is a full-time, tenure-track position, to start in 2024. The appointment will be at the associate professor level. Highly qualified applicants may be considered at the full-professor level.

The Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering and Technology Department (MMET) at Oregon Tech is currently comprised of fourteen faculty members serving a student body approximately 500 students and is the largest Department in the College of Engineering, Technology and Management. The department offers four degree programs: BSME (ABET-EAC accredited), BSMET (ABET-ETAC accredited), BSMFG (ABET-ETAC accredited) and MSMFG. The MMET Department is located on three campuses; the main Oregon Tech campus in Klamath Falls, OR; our campus located in the Portland-Metro area, and our branch campus located in Everett, WA. Oregon Tech is the only accredited public polytechnic university in the Pacific Northwest, is one of the top public regional universities in the western US, and is consistently ranked among the top public universities in the nation for undergraduate engineering programs by US News & World Report.

The MMET Chair, as departmental leader, liaison, and advocate, is a faculty member within the MMET department who leads the department and acts as liaison between the MMET department and the college and university administration. The MMET Chair works in close coordination with and under the supervision of the Dean to achieve the strategic goals and vision for the Department, College, and University. Other duties may be assigned by the Dean based on strategic priorities of the College and University.

These duties and responsibilities include the following:
• Lead departmental growth with respect to students, faculty, programs, resources and academic quality.
• Create and facilitate the implementation of a strategic mission and vision for the department, seeking to recruit a diverse student body, elevate student success through increasing student retention and graduation, enhance departmental revenue and opportunities through successful research and education partnerships, contain cost effectively, and build the brand recognition of the department, college and university.
• Ensure clear consistent course goals and objectives are established by the department for all campuses; that department programs are designed to achieve these ends; and that goals, objectives and programs are periodically evaluated to guarantee that they are suited to the needs of major and non-major students.
• Manage the department’s resources in consultation with the dean, IR and Budget Offices, recognizing that revenue generation and effective cost control are necessary elements for the department’s viability and success.
• Foster a departmental culture of discovery, innovation, civility, collegiality, and respect for diversity.
• Give thoughtful review and comments to faculty in areas which encourage research and innovation, pedagogical improvement and professional development, including scholarly work, Sabbatical Leave , and other internally or externally funded activities. Encourage faculty to engage students in research and other experiential learning activities.
• Monitor student enrollment numbers and work proactively with IR and Strategic Enrollment Management to extend, expand and ensure departmental participation in recruitment efforts appropriate to the program.
• Work closely with the Dean and the Advancement Office on any activities that involve or have the potential to involve fundraising activities.
• Develop and expand ties and relationships with appropriate partners (including Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center (OMIC) and other industry, Office for Sponsored Projects, and community organizations) in order to increase opportunities for faculty professional development, applied research, student professional experiences and employment opportunities, and equipment donations.

Those with a Ph.D. in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (or a closely related discipline), prior management experience, and academic scholarship and experience are highly encouraged to apply!

Oregon Tech is one of the top public regional universities in the western United States and is consistently ranked among the top public colleges in the nation by US News & World Report. Oregon Tech has multiple locations including a rural campus in Klamath Falls, an urban campus in Portland-Metro, and an online campus. Each campus offers a variety of undergraduate and Master’s degree programs. Oregon Tech prides itself on delivering a high-quality, hands-on educational experience distinguished by a low student-to-faculty ratio.

Oregon Tech’s Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology (MMET) department is growing rapidly – both due to increasing enrollment and new opportunities to develop applied research programs. MMET is already one of the largest departments at Oregon Tech and currently offers 4 undergraduate and graduate degrees at our 3 campuses in the Pacific Northwest:

• Klamath Falls
• Portland-Metro
• Seattle (Boeing students only)

The degrees include:
• BS Mechanical Engineering
• BS Mechanical Engineering Technology

• BS Manufacturing Engineering Technology
• MS Manufacturing Engineering Technology

All of our undergraduate programs are accredited by ABET. We place a very strong emphasis on hands-on learning and project work. Our students are active in competitions such as Formula SAE, Baja SAE and RoboSub; and many students take advantage of the internship opportunities offered through MECOP – a unique internship alliance driven collaboratively by Oregon’s engineering universities, their respective student bodies, and industry partners.

We’re also growing our applied research presence through industry collaboration including a leadership role in the Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center (OMIC).

Oregon Tech is investing heavily in the future of the MMET department. On the Klamath Falls campus, the MMET workshops and laboratories are well-equipped including the state-of-the-art Additive Manufacturing facilities at the Center for Excellence in Engineering & Technology (CEET). The CEET building include collaboration spaces, makerspaces, labs, and virtual classrooms to deliver lectures simultaneously to all Oregon Tech campuses, community colleges and industry partners.

This is an exciting time to be part of a growing department!
