About the Opportunity

About the Opportunity:

The Master of Biotechnology program at Northeastern University's Toronto campus invites applications from qualified candidates for a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position with the title of Assistant, Associate or Full Teaching Professor.

The successful applicant will have the knowledge to teach Biotechnology courses at the Master's level. This faculty position has their academic appointment in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and reports to the Chair of that department but will work under the direction of the Toronto-based faculty coordinator and the Boston-based Director of the Biotechnology Program.

This position is based at Northeastern University's Toronto Campus. The Master's in Biotechnology is designed to allow students to pursue advanced training and excel in bioscience while simultaneously developing highly valued business skills.

Responsibilities:

Non-tenure track teaching faculty with appointments in Chemistry and Chemical Biology teach a total of eight courses (18-24 credits) and provide one equivalent unit of service to the College per year.

Candidates will be expected to teach during the fall (September-December), spring (January-April), and summer (May-August) terms. Candidates are expected to have high aptitude and interest in teaching, provide industry-relevance to the curriculum, and maintain cutting-edge industry knowledge. Candidates are expected to coordinate with other instructors and advisors to monitor student progress and assist students when necessary.
  • Teaching responsibilities are subject to modification based on program needs and the time commitment of the service requirement and are at the discretion of program leadership. Teaching responsibilities include the following: teaching excellence, including utilization of modern pedagogical approaches that create and inclusive and active classrooms; effective facilitation of rich, respectful debates and discussions in an in-person or online class; timely review and grading of assignments with appropriate coaching and feedback to the students; consistent connection with students and their performance; and adherence to Northeastern's policies. Course design may be required, including development and instruction of online courses.
  • The service requirement for this position may include: participation in administrative committees, curriculum planning, mentoring students, and building local industry partnerships of value to the program.

Qualifications:
  • Qualified candidates should be committed to fostering diverse and inclusive environments as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to a Northeastern University education.
  • Candidate must have a Ph.D. in life sciences and a commitment to teaching excellence at the university level.
  • Demonstrated experience involving the biotechnology industry is essential.
  • This position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work productively and interact successfully with students, faculty, staff, and industry partners.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in the business domain of biotechnology or in professional skills development is considered an asset.
  • Candidates are asked to submit a CV, cover letter, teaching statement and diversity statement.

Please indicate how your expertise, knowledge, and skills have prepared you to contribute to this work with written statements addressing the following prompts:

Teaching statement:

Please summarize your past instructional and mentorship experiences, your pedagogical philosophy, your plans/goals for teaching in the College of Science (including existing and proposed courses), and your strategies for teaching and mentoring a diverse cohort of graduate students.

Diversity statement:

Please provide a statement describing a time when you altered or changed your approach to research, teaching, or service because of the diversity of the group you were working with or your awareness of marginalized populations. What changes did you make, and what did you learn from this situation? We are interested in how you respond to such situations, not the identities of the people involved, so please only disclose what you are comfortable with. Your statement should demonstrate an understanding of the barriers facing individuals from groups marginalized in your field and be in alignment with Northeastern's mission to reflect the diversity of the societies in which it maintains campuses and to meet the educational needs and interests of its diverse population. Some faculty candidates may not have substantial past experience. If that is the case, we recommend focusing in your statement on the types of activities you think could be useful.
