Chief Executive Officer
Southwest Advanced Prototyping (SWAP) Hub
Arizona State University

Arizona is ground zero for the resurgence of semiconductor research, innovation, and manufacturing in the United States. Arizona State University (ASU), and in particular ASU’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, is already a critical player in the semiconductor ecosystem and primed to play a growing role by nurturing the most advanced semiconductor technologies at ASU’s MacroTechnology Works (MTW) facility. ASU is evolving to respond to industry needs while also leading large state and federal projects through the CHIPS Act and other programs.

The Southwest Advanced Prototyping Hub (SWAP Hub), led by ASU, is part of a national network of eight Department of Defense (DoD) Microelectronics Commons regional innovation hubs linking diverse stakeholders across academia, industry, national laboratories, small businesses, nonprofits, and government to develop microelectronics prototypes that meet defense needs. The Hub has been awarded $39.8M for its first project year. The SWAP Hub is off to a strong start with ever-increasing partnerships, growing from 70 to 150 partners in the six months since its launch.

The SWAP Hub’s long-term success is predicated on a Chief Executive Officer who will provide strategic executive leadership and can continue the implementation of a novel vision for microelectronics prototyping and manufacturing via technical thought leadership on local, domestic, and global scales. The Chief Executive Officer will lead the implementation of a vision for both growth and financial sustainability beyond the initial DoD award.

The ideal candidate, possessing a Ph.D. in a related field, must be a recognized leader with extensive semiconductor fab experience or semiconductor research experience and working knowledge of funding, finance, administrative, managerial, and business functions (i.e., strong technical and business acumen related to fab or research operations). The ideal candidate will be seen as a credible leader and visionary in DoD and semiconductor industry circles.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President, ASU Knowledge Enterprise, the Chief Executive Officer will be responsible for working closely with the SWAP Hub’s Chief Operating Officer, Chief Technical Officer, Advisory Board and ASU and other leadership members to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for growth, impact, and sustainability. Responsibilities include vision setting, external representation, marketing, budgeting, milestone tracking, human resources, and partner relationship management.

Arizona State University has retained the services of the executive search firm Korn Ferry to conduct this important search. All inquiries, nominations, and applications should be submitted to Korn Ferry at the e-mail address below. Initial applications should consist of two documents. First, a full-length curriculum vitae. Second, a letter of interest describing why you are interested in both the role and the ASU SWAP Hub, why you are a good fit for the position based on your experience, and why now is a good time for you to consider the opportunity. For priority consideration, please submit application materials in confidence by April 29, 2024.
