Brown University | Vice President for Research

Brown University seeks to appoint a Vice President for Research, to begin July 1, 2024.  Reporting to the Provost and serving as a member of the President’s Cabinet, the VPR serves as the chief research officer of the University and is charged with supporting and enhancing all aspects of research across Brown.  Following a decade of rapid expansion in the University’s research portfolio as part of an ambitious strategic plan, Building on Distinction, Brown is rededicating its commitment to an extensive and impactful research enterprise through the Operational Plan for Investing in Research, which will enhance research excellence through targeted investments, increased support, and new facilities, advancing Brown’s mission to benefit society through the creation and dissemination of knowledge.

Brown seeks an experienced academic leader with a strategic vision for supporting research across the full range of academic disciplines; deep experience in a complex research environment; a record of outstanding scholarly achievement; knowledge of the landscape of federally sponsored research and a familiarity with philanthropic and other sources of funding; an ability to inspire others coupled with a collaborative leadership style; and an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  Along with a mandate to support research across a broad range of scholarly domains, the VPR will oversee a complex organizational structure that includes research administration, risk and compliance, technology transfer and industry partnerships, and other areas within the portfolio of the Division of Research.

Brown University is a nonprofit Ivy League institution distinguished by its unique undergraduate academic program, a world-class faculty, outstanding graduate and medical students, and a tradition of innovative and rigorous education that crosses and transcends fields of study.  The University’s mission—to serve the community, the nation, and the world by educating and preparing students (in the words of the College charter) to “discharge the offices of life with usefulness and reputation”—is fulfilled through strong faculty-student collaboration and a clear sense of purpose.

As of FY23, Brown’s annual external funding for research was $242 million. The top funding sources included the Department of Health and Human Services; National Science Foundation; Department of Defense and Energy; NASA; Department of Education; and several private, corporate, and nonprofit organizations. The total research expenditures (both direct and indirect costs) were $281 million.
