The Department of Education is part of the College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS) and offers bachelor’s degrees (BA or BS) leading to teacher certification, educational studies or instructional technology as well as a Bachelor of General Studies with a major in children and families.  At the graduate level, the department offers multiple master’s degree programs for professionals in the field of education, an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) and Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.). The Department of Education at the University of Michigan – Dearborn invites applications for a tenured faculty position (at the associate or full level) in Urban Educational Leadership centered on disrupting historical inequities with respect to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, disability status, and other student, family, and community factors. We are looking for candidates who are interested in engaged scholarship that builds community partnerships and supports the development of masters and doctoral students. The department is looking to grow its programs in education leadership through interdisciplinary collaboration, recruitment of new students, and expanding community partnerships. The successful candidate will join faculty, students, and community partners working in the existing Masters in Educational Leadership, Masters in Community Based Education, and the Doctoral program with a focus on research and teaching for urban leadership. Candidates should have experience serving in an administrative role in pK-12 schools and a record of research focused on reducing inequalities in youth outcomes in urban settings. A successful candidate will be able to draw on a broad range of theoretical perspectives and leadership models (e.g., CRT and other critical theories, transformational and servant leadership models, appreciative inquiry, change theory, etc.) to develop potential lines of scholarship including (but not limited to) examinations of:

  • policies and practices in K-12 settings and how these can promote educational experiences that build on the social cultural and ecological assets of a community to empower students and their families
  • roles of educational leaders in promoting systems that center students’ and families’ funds of knowledge in ways that promote culturally sustaining pedagogies
  • impacts of social and cultural disruptions on students’ academic and socioemotional outcomes and how leadership practices can challenge these outcomes
  • policies and/or practices (at the district, school, or classroom level) that disrupt the production of educational inequalities with respect to race, economic disadvantage, language status, disability, or other factors in producing educational inequalities
  • interdependencies among schools, city systems, and agencies (e.g., health, mental health, justice, housing) and practices that leverage these to improve youth development and well-being

Regardless of specific scholarly focus, candidates will demonstrate the ability to:

  • teach and mentor graduate students pursuing administrative certification through the Michigan Department of Education
  • build partnerships that support the recruitment and development of educational leaders at the school, district, and community level
  • cultivate trusting relationships with district partners and other stakeholders to co-construct a research agenda

Candidates should have an exemplary record of teaching, engaged scholarship, and service that includes building school/community/university partnerships and mentoring and training future administrators and researchers.

  • Earned doctorate in an appropriate field with an emphasis on Educational Leadership, additional related expertise in equity and diversity, social justice, and urban education is preferred.
  • Experience with educational administration at the district or school level in a K-12 school setting in the United States.
  • Established record of scholarship
  • Ability to utilize technology to support teaching and to teach online courses
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Commitment to metropolitan and school/community engagement
