About the Opportunity

The College of Science and the College of Engineering at Northeastern University (Boston Campus) invite applications for positions at all ranks (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor), beginning in academic year 2024-2025 in the field of Experimental Quantum Materials and Sensors. The College of Science comprises six departments: Biology, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Marine and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology. The College of Engineering comprises of five departments: Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

The position is part of a major interdisciplinary and cross-college hiring effort under its new Quantum Initiative. The primary appointment will be in Physics or Electrical and Computer Engineering with possible joint appointments in other departments including Chemistry, Mathematics, and Chemical Biology. The goal of this initiative is to enable Northeastern to assume global leadership in use-inspired quantum science, engineering, educational and societal impact programs.

We seek exceptional, game-changing applicants who will establish a vibrant experimental program in materials and devices for quantum information sciences, including but not limited to quantum and qubit materials and devices, quantum-enabled sensing, room-temperature quantum materials, quantum communications, and quantum-enabled networks, IoT, energy and other technologies impacting global health, security, and sustainability. Of special interest are the experimental science and engineering of quantum and qubit materials for developing next generation solid-state devices based on the manipulation of spin, light, quasiparticles, and other novel approaches with high potential for disrupting metrology, spectroscopy, imaging, and related areas. Experimental frontiers of practical room-temperature quantum materials including high quality quantum/qubit materials synthesis and their sophisticated characterizations, efficient integration of disparate quantum systems, and developing scalable approaches are also of interest.

The successful candidate will ideally complement existing research strengths and will have the opportunity to collaborate with, and help develop, cross-disciplinary teams across the University. Cross-disciplinary research programs and appointments are strongly encouraged within the College, and across the University. The initiative intends to bring eminent scholars, rising stars and younger faculty members into a vibrant new research facility at our Burlington campus with state-of-the-art experimental and computational infrastructure.

The Department of Physics (https://cos.northeastern.edu/physics/) includes 45 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 11 full-time teaching faculty; three research faculty; and one professor of the practice. Physics enrolls over 100 undergraduate physics majors, over 200 physics majors combined with other majors, and over 100 PhD students. The College of Science and Physics Department are in a vibrant expansion phase. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (https://ece.northeastern.edu/) includes 85 tenured/tenure track faculty, 15 research faculty, and 15 teaching faculty. ECE has around 950 undergraduate students, 600 masters students and 325 Ph.D. students. The department continues to be very research active and continues to grow holistically in all areas of ECE with Quantum Engineering as one of its current focus.

Northeastern is home to the Coastal Sustainability Institute, the Global Resilience Institute, the Barnett Institute for Chemical and Biological Analysis, the Center for Drug Discovery, the Institute for Chemical Imaging of Living Systems, the Network Science Institute, the Northeastern University Center for Renewable Energy Technology, an NSF Frontier Center in Theoretical Biological Physics, and the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Complex Systems, providing a rich multidisciplinary intellectual environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The potential hires are expected to develop vigorous research programs cross cutting the fields of physics, chemistry, and science and engineering disciplines. Faculty members at Northeastern are expected to develop independent research programs that attract external funding; teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate level; supervise students and postdocs in their area of research; and participate in service to the department, university, and discipline. Qualified candidates must have excellence in, or a demonstrated commitment to, working with diverse student populations and/or in a culturally diverse work and educational environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Ph.D. in a relevant Physics, Engineering, quantum or quantum-synergistic discipline, or in an interdisciplinary area of relevance by the appointment start date is required.

All applicants should have a strong record of scholarly accomplishment that demonstrates the ability to build a strong research program. Candidates seeking appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level should have substantial research productivity and an established history of grant support and academic service. Academic rank at the Associate Professor and Full Professor levels will be commensurate with experience and qualifications reflecting a record of demonstrated teaching and scholarly excellence. Research excellence is the topmost priority. Depending on the research profile and expertise, a joint or affiliate appointment in another department(s) within the University is possible.
