Reports to: VP for Management & Operations

Purpose: The Executive Director of Buildings and Grounds is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair and improvement of the University's physical facilities, including buildings, grounds and landscaping, and infrastructure for both the Tahrir and New Cairo campuses. He/She will play a crucial role in ensuring that these assets are well-maintained and meet all safety and regulatory standards. The executive director leads a team of maintenance in-house staff, project managers, utility engineers, and safety staff, and coordinates with external contractors to carry out necessary repairs and upgrades for large and small capital projects. This position requires strong technical knowledge of building construction, building systems, and operations as well as organizational and leadership skills to effectively manage the operations and ensure the optimal functioning of the University's physical infrastructure.


Principal Accountabilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive maintenance and repair program for all buildings, grounds, and infrastructure across the AUC’s New Cairo and Tahrir Square campus and other off-campus housing and facilities.
  • Oversee maintenance, project management, safety, landscape, and utilities departments, ensuring that all work is performed efficiently and in compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Ensures utilities and energy solutions meet university needs at optimal costs.
  • Oversee the maintenance and construction contracts, and ensure that they are in compliance with the relevant university legal and procurement regulations as well as market standards.
  • Manage the maintenance and projects budget and ensure cost-effective utilization of resources.
  • Conduct regular inspections of buildings, grounds, and equipment to identify maintenance needs and potential safety hazards.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the safe and efficient use of University facilities.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders, repair logs, and equipment inventories. Instill a strong customer service mindset across all areas of the operation with a commitment to quality.
  • Supervise and train maintenance staff, providing guidance and support to ensure their professional development and adherence to established protocols.
  • Collaborate with other departments to identify and address facility-related needs and support their operational requirements.
  • Work closely with University Architect and Campus Design Offices on the execution of small projects and the oversight of external contractors for major repairs, renovations, and construction projects, ensuring timely completion and quality workmanship.
  • Serve as a member of the Management and Operations leadership team, working collaboratively with all campus services functions, including Finance, Procurement, Legal Departments, IT, security and others to ensure a cohesive, client-centered approach.
  • Work in close partnership with the Tahrir Operations Director to ensure the Tahrir Square campus buildings and grounds, including the historic Palace receive appropriate care.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices, new technologies, and regulations related to building maintenance and safety.
  • Develop and monitor strong KPI measures for all departments, benchmarking and adoption of best practices across industry and higher education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  1. Minimum education requirement: A bachelor’s degree in engineering, or a related field; a master’s degree in facilities or construction management, and/or a Project Management Professional (PMP) credential is an asset.
  2. Experience: 20 years of progressive management experience within construction projects, facilities management, building Infrastructure or related fields
  3. Skills:
  • In-depth knowledge of the construction industry Experience in project management
  • Strong knowledge of MEP systems
  • Strong knowledge of budgeting and financial management principles
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • Outstanding strategic thinking and conceptual skills
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, leadership and decision-making capabilities
  • Fluency in oral and written communication in English and Arabic Exceptional presentation skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent leadership and team-building skills  
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities effectively
  • Strong commitment to safety and ensuring clean and well-maintained facilities
