CNB Senior Software Engineer

As part of the Department of Psychiatry, the Brain Behavior Lab (BBL) and the Lifespan Brain Institute (LiBI) are devoted to the study of brain and behavior using innovative neuroimaging research techniques and the application of bioinformatics resources. LiBI brings together researchers in medicine, psychiatry, engineering, computer science, physics, psychology, and biostatistics to understand brain structure and function, based on functional and structural neuroimaging data. The Penn Computerized Neurocognitive Battery (CNB) is a computerized batteries of tests and scales that measure multiple domains of neurocognition that are used by BBL and LiBI researchers and collaborators around the world. The Senior Software Engineer position will work as part of a our CNB team developers to drive innovation and integrate new methodologies into our current and future CNB projects.

CNB Senior Software Engineer

The CNB Senior Software Engineer is responsible for the design, development, implementation and maintenance of custom applications of the Penn Computerized Neurocognitive Battery (CNB) . CNB applications enable researchers across the world to easily collect behavioral data in different languages remotely or in-house for participants of all groups and ages. The software engineer will will also work closely with the team on designing and developing mobile application of the CNB integrating health applications (e.g Healthkit).

The ideal candidate for the Software Engineer position demonstrates strong software development fundamentals, and is capable of working with a range of technologies. This position requires experience in application development and a thorough understanding of React and related software frameworks and technologies.

  • Take an active role in developing, testing, and maintaining CNB backend services
  • Development of analytical database and data warehouse, design and implementation of REST APIs
  • Responsible for designing, developing, testing API integrations and data pipelines
  • Help develop new features and product ideas
  • Consistently create optimal design adhering to architectural best practices; consider scalability, reliability and performance of systems/contexts affected when defining technical designs
  • Assist with the preparation of documentation, training, and support of various systems
  • Review of peer's work through code reviews

  • Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in Computer Science or related field and minimum of 3-5 years experience in software engineering/development or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Interest in building products meant to be used by real users.
  • Proven abilities in developing your own scalable, products/applications from scratch
  • Extensive demonstrated hands on experience using Java or JavaScript and experience designing, developing, and maintaining complex applications and database experience (SQL Server and/or Oracle) - including (but not limited to) component-based frameworks such as React
  • Experience with variety of modern web technologies such as: Git, Node.js, GraphQL, React, Web API's, Docker, Databases, Kubernetes including Python (Perl or R or MATLAB), Java.
  • Outstanding problem solving and analytical skills in addition to communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Must be eager to learn new technologies and explore the best way to solve challenging technical problems.

This position is contingent on continued funding.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
