Senior Writer

About the Role

The senior writer is a self-starter, able to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines. Must be able to produce content that meets the high-quality standards of The Huntington. The candidate is a seasoned team player with the ability to work readily with staff within the Office of Communications and Marketing as well as across the institution and beyond.

S/he/they demonstrates a background of working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds, using a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible approach.

Essential Duties

  • Writes and edits a range of content, including but not limited to blog posts, magazine articles, brochures and web copy, and content related to the types of public outreach engaged in by the Office of Communications and Marketing.

  • Enterprises story ideas with other communications colleagues, curators, caretakers, and others across the institution.

  • Serves as writer and project manager for the Annual Report, the institution’s publication of record, including researching, collaborating with the institution’s division directors, sourcing and choosing related images, and working with the managing editor and graphic designer to schedule and assemble layout and final publication according to editorial schedule.

  • Assists in the editing and publishing of Momentum, a magazine produced in collaboration with The Huntington’s advancement team.

  • Assists Communications and Marketing and other staff in editing and proofreading copy.

  • Serves as an active and contributing member of the communications team, meeting weekly to plan content, set and adjust editorial schedules, coordinate work, and brainstorm projects and activities.

  • Proactively provides updates to Communications and Marketing staff on the activities of other divisions as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Candidate Requirements and Experience

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Must be an excellent news and features writer with the dual ability to identify great story ideas and then engage in compelling storytelling.

  • Must be able to demonstrate a deep interest in the areas in which The Huntington collects.

  • Must have a background in arts and culture writing.

  • Must have a seasoned background in deadline writing with the ability to juggle several projects simultaneously.

  • Must have well-polished interpersonal skills with a documented track record for successfully interviewing story sources.

  • Must have extensive knowledge of AP style and be comfortable and capable of editing on deadline.

  • Demonstrated success working in teams and in collaboration with others within a divisional team, internally across an institution, as well as with external partners.

  • Demonstrated verbal communications skills, and strong organizational and administrative skills. 

  • Must be efficient in managing his/her/their time and coordinating work on several projects at once. 

  • Must be able to show published writing from a museum, university, news organization, cultural organization, or similar institution.

  • Proficient in MS Office, SharePoint, Teams, Adobe, and related file-sharing/editing software.

Preferred:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Chinese a plus.

  • Some experience in capturing photography to accompany a piece of writing.


Education and Experience

  • Five to seven years of experience in institutional communications, journalism, writing, and editing.

  • Experience at a museum, university, cultural or related organization preferred.

  • These skills and abilities are usually acquired through the completion of a B.A. degree, preferably in English, journalism, or equivalent coursework. Demonstrated ability and job experience may provide an appropriate substitute for preferred degree.
