POSITION SUMMARY

DeSales University is seeking applications for the inaugural dean of the newly formed College of Science. DeSales University is embarking on an exciting new phase in its academic structure by transitioning from a divisional to a school/college structure, necessitating the creation of new dean positions. These roles are introduced as part of our strategic shift towards a four-college model, developed after extensive consultations with stakeholders across the University. Establishing these positions aims to enhance operational and communication efficiency, foster interdisciplinary synergies, contribute to an environment that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion, and propel the University toward its vision of academic leadership and innovation. The dean will foster the mission, vision, and core values of DeSales University through the development and implementation of a College of Science strategic plan. The dean will maintain an esprit de corps within the college that is consistent with the Salesian mission of DeSales University.

The dean of the College of Science serves as its chief academic and administrative officer and reports directly to the provost, alongside collaboration with the University president. In coordination with department chairs and graduate directors, the dean oversees recruitment, and appointment of full-time faculty, adjunct faculty, and staff. The dean supervises, evaluates, and supports the graduate and undergraduate faculty in the areas of teaching, professional development, scholarship and service. In addition, the dean oversees academic program review and assessment to determine if program objectives are being met and making a sufficient financial contribution to the university.

The College of Science will consist of the following departments: Biology and Neuroscience, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science, Sport and Exercise Physiology, and Social Sciences. The 34 full-time and 136 part-time faculty that comprise the college support approximately 750 students in 12 undergraduate majors and 5 graduate programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree related to a relevant discipline in the college. The successful candidate will possess organizational leadership skills that include significant fiscal management experience, program management, curricular oversight, and student support with a focus on retention. Prior responsibility for budgets, personnel decisions, performance reviews, and decisions for promotion and tenure at the chair level or above is preferred. Proven successful experience in recruiting and retaining students for both existing and new undergraduate and graduate programs is also preferred.

This is administrative 12- month full-time position. Interested applicants should send a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, a Diversity & Inclusion Statement, and a list of three references.

For full consideration, please submit materials by March 18, 2024. Review of applications will begin on March 18, 2024, and continue until the position is filled.
