Job Details

DeSales University, in Center Valley, PA, is a private, coeducational, four-year liberal arts Salesian, Catholic university, under the leadership of the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales. Founded in 1965, the 550-acre suburban campus is located 50 miles north of Philadelphia and about 90 miles southwest of New York City. A total enrollment of nearly 3,500 includes undergraduate day and evening students, and graduate students. DeSales has approximately 135 full-time faculty members and offers more than 40 bachelor's degrees, twelve graduate programs, and over 20 certificate programs in a wide range of disciplines; many of these can be completed fully online. For further information, please visit our website, E.O.E.

DeSales University is seeking applications for the inaugural dean of the newly formed College of Arts, Education, and Humanities. DeSales University is embarking on an exciting new phase in its academic structure by transitioning from a divisional to a school/college structure, necessitating the creation of new dean positions. These roles are introduced as part of our strategic shift towards a four-college model, developed after extensive consultations with stakeholders across the University. Establishing these positions aims to enhance operational and communication efficiency, foster interdisciplinary synergies, contribute to an environment that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion, and propel the University toward its vision of academic leadership and innovation. The dean will foster the mission, vision, and core values of DeSales University through the development and implementation of a College of Arts, Education, and Humanities strategic plan. The dean will maintain an esprit de corps within the college that is consistent with the Salesian mission of DeSales University.

The dean of the College of Arts, Education, and Humanities serves as its chief academic and administrative officer and reports directly to the provost, alongside collaboration with the University president. In coordination with associate deans and department chairs, the dean will oversee recruitment, and appointment of full-time faculty, adjunct faculty, and staff. The dean supervises, evaluates, and supports the graduate and undergraduate faculty in the areas of teaching, professional development, scholarship and service.  In addition, the dean supports the associate deans and chairs in accreditation processes, academic program review and assessment as well as determining that programs are making a sufficient financial contribution to the university.

The College of Arts, Education, and Humanities will consist of the following: the well-established School of Performing Arts which consists of the Theatre Department, Dance Department, and TV/Film Department which has recently opened its state-of-the-art virtual production studio; the School of Education that offers both undergraduate and graduate programs; the Department of Humanities which offers undergraduate degrees in Communication Studies, English, and History and an MFA in Creative Writing; and the Department of Philosophy and Theology.

Candidates must hold a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in a field relevant to the college and have familiarity with the Catholic intellectual tradition. The successful candidate will possess the ability to build relationships and collaborations with regional school districts and other community partners. The candidate will also possess organizational leadership skills that include significant fiscal management experience, program management, curricular oversight, and student support. Prior responsibility for budgets, personnel decisions, performance reviews, and decisions for promotion and tenure at the chair level or above is preferred. Proven successful experience in recruiting and retaining students for both existing and new programs is also preferred.

This is administrative 12- month full-time position. Interested applicants should send a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, a Diversity & Inclusion Statement, and a list of three references.

For full consideration, please submit materials by March 18, 2024. Review of applications will begin on March 18, 2024, and continue until the position is filled.
