Summary of Job Duties:The instructional designer will work to provide training and assistance to faculty in designing and developing online courses, and provide any other necessary support to faculty and staff in their efforts to improve teaching and learning. Responsibilities include managing the Blackboard Online Learning Management System, providing support to faculty and staff in adopting new instructional technologies, working directly with faculty and staff to design, develop, and implement web-based and web-enhanced courses and course materials; assisting faculty and staff with incorporating multimedia, such as audio and video, graphic, animation, and simulation into their courses; assisting administrators with assessment of the instructional effectiveness of web-based courses and course materials, providing faculty with assistance in revising existing courseware; participate in faculty, staff, and student training and the development of training materials, and performing other duties as required and/or assigned. The instructional designer is a member of the Instructional Support department. The position reports to the Director of Instructional Support.

Qualifications:

Education & Work Experience: Minimum requirements include a master’s degree in instructional technology, instructional design, or a closely related field, one or more years experience working in web-course design and development preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Training *
    • Develop training materials
    • Provide training for faculty, staff, and students
    • Design training protocols and maintain records of compliance
  • System Administration *
    • Manage courses and user access in Blackboard Learn
    • Monitor system usage and report issues to administration and IT
    • Work with IT to archive courses and manage retention of course data
  • Instructional Design/Instructional Support *
    • Support faculty and staff in adopting new instructional technologies
    • Work with faculty and staff to design, develop, and implement web-based and web-enhanced courses and course materials
    • Assist faculty and staff with implementing multimedia (audio, video, graphics, animation, and simulation)
    • Troubleshoot faculty technical issues in Blackboard Learn
    • Assist faculty in revising existing courses
    • Assist faculty in meeting accessibility standards for content
  • Other Instructional Support related duties*
    • Assist administrators with assessment of instructional effectiveness of web-based courses and course materials
    • Maintain website and institutional pages in Bb for distance learning
    • Work with the TSI Committee to enhance course quality and the use of instructional technology on the UAFS campus.
    • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: To perform the job successfully, the following competencies are required for the essential functions of this position:
  • Knowledge of instructional design principles, learning theories, instructional technology, current research in instructional design, and online teaching and learning
  • Familiarity with national trends and issues
  • Ability to develop effective instruction that is not limited to a single pedagogical orientation
  • Ability to successfully work with faculty and staff
  • Understanding of the higher education environment
  • Knowledge of and experience with multi-media and Web production, including digital audio/video production, Adobe Creative Cloud, Photoshop, and other similar technologies and applications
  • Experience with Web 2.0 technologies (wikis, social networking, and blogging, among others)
  • Ability to write HTML in web page development. Familiarity with JavaScript.
  • Ability to work in both PC and Apple environments
  • Excellent writing, presentation, interpersonal, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team under minimum supervision
  • Other job related education and/or experience may be substituted for part of these requirements

Works closely with Technology Support staff in the administration, maintenance, updating, and troubleshooting, including student support, to maintain and support the Blackboard Learn learning management system.

Includes some setup of audio and video equipment in labs, offices, and classrooms. Some minor lifting and working under desks (to adjust cables and equipment) is occasionally required.
