Position Summary: Interlochen seeks a full-time classical piano instructor who will attract talented, creative, and engaged students in classical piano performance.  Successful candidates will have a track record of excellence in teaching talented young pianists, and will demonstrate significant student and personal musical accomplishments. Though not required, the capacity and openness to teach other genres, such as jazz and/or contemporary music will receive special consideration.


Essentials Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach private and group piano lessons
  • Coach chamber music and other ensembles according to skill set
  • Teach additional courses (theory, music fundamentals, music history), based on skill-set and department need
  • Design and implement curriculum
  • Schedule lessons and concerts
  • Communicate with parents
  • Recruit and mentor students of high caliber
  • Work with students to record and submit prescreen and audition materials
  • Write letters of recommendation for college for IAA Seniors
  • Seeks the best use of materials, equipment and staff to maximize efficiency and effectiveness
  • Complies with ICA policies/procedures and acts as a good steward of ICA finances
  • Respects the culture, diversity and rights of all students, their families and the community
  • Prioritizes duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Work is performed primarily in a musical classroom environment with extensive internal and external stakeholder contact.

Required Skills and Experience:


Education:  Bachelor of Music Degree required, Masters of Music or Doctor of Music Arts in piano performance.  Applicants with significant professional performance experience will also be considered.


Experience: Excellent pianist and experienced educator with a background of successful employment in an educational setting, with 5 years of experience. National or emerging recognition as a musician is essential. 

Equipment Familiarity: Mac Laptop, Google Suite

Certifications, Licenses or Special Training: 

  • Must meet and maintain background screening requirements as detailed in policy 12.HR.01 Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks. 
  • Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets the eligibility requirements of ICA’s insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving). 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Ability to speak tactfully and clearly with students and parents about performance levels and expectations
  • Ability to convey lessons in a consistent and professional manner while showing empathy for learners.
  • Ability to follow and execute specific verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to promote and maintain positive interaction with all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate respect for cultural, ethnic, spiritual, and linguistic diversity and values including differences in personal goals, lifestyle choices and varying family backgrounds and histories.
