Within the Counseling and Student Success division, the student services advisor will perform a variety of responsible duties involving direct and purposeful contact with students to improve student engagement, planning, retention and success. In a specialty area by meta major(s), the Student Service Advisor will provide specialized academic and career advisement and other guidance and services to students, particularly with disproportionately impacted students and students not participating in student service programs. By working cooperatively and collaboratively with colleagues across the college, the advisor will strengthen case management practices and engagement with in the meta major communities. By creating a team of advisors within the counseling division, we aim to better align our services to meet the unique needs of our students, align our services with Guided Pathways, and promote equity and inclusion.

Provide specialized advisement and paraprofessional services to students in specialty field such as career or education planning, job placement, admissions and records, Financial Aid, Extended Opportunities and Services (EOP&S) or other assigned area.

Interview individual students to determine program eligibility and obtain information required to develop student educational, financial and career plans.

Analyze student date and certify eligibility for program participation as required; interpret, apply and explain complex rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions.

Select, administer, score and interpret tests and assessment instruments; analyze alternative courses of action and assist students in developing appropriate plans.

Communicate with academic counselors, District personnel, business leaders, social service agencies, community resources, educational institutions and others to coordinate activities, exchange information and refer students for further assistance.

Maintain current knowledge of a variety of complex regulations, requirements and policies related to assigned specialty area.

Develop forms, handbooks, manuals and other written materials to facilitate student advisement.

Plan, develop and conduct workshops to provide students with specialized assistance and information in assigned area.

Train and provide work direction to assigned personnel and student assistants; recruit and select hourly employees as needed.

Perform related duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:

Any combination of equivalent to: two years of college course work in Social Sciences and Human Service and three years of increasingly responsible experience in a student services or related field.


Knowledge/Areas of Expertise:

Specialized functions, operation and activities in an assigned student advisement area.

CLOSING DATE: FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2024 at 3:00 p.m.

SALARY Starting salary is $6,036 per month. Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. Advanced salary placement may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Salary increases are granted on the first day of the month following each year of service, until Step F is reached ($7,760 monthly).

Employees contribute 8% of their earnings toward the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).


This position is designated a categorically funded, temporary, full-time, twelve-month classified position, and is contingent upon available funding. The standard work week is 40 hours of scheduled duty per week of not more than five consecutive work days. Schedule may vary to include hours outside of the normal work schedule, including evenings and weekends depending on operational need. This position also requires the ability to travel to off-campus locations to connect with and recruit prospective students.

The College provides a diversified insured benefit program for all full-time employees, including medical, dental, vision and life insurance. Dependent medical, dental, and vision insurance is available, toward which both the College and the employee contribute.

Sick Leave and Disability

Paid sick leave is granted equal to one day for each month of service. Sick leave days may be accumulated indefinitely.


Full-time employees contribute a percentage of their regular salary to the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and Social Security. Previous employment performed in a different public retirement system may allow eligibility to continue in the same retirement system .

Summer Work Hours

During the summer, employees work eight 32-hour work weeks with full pay.
