  • Under general supervision, provides advanced support to graduate assistants, adjunct faculty, faculty, and staff in utilizing and understanding benefit, retirement, and wellness programs.


Functional Area 1: Benefit Administration

Percent Effort: Analyst-40% / Specialist-60%

Job Duties:
  • Responsible for the day-to-day benefit activities including benefits at hire and as a result of benefit life events such as marriage, birth/adoption, death, gain or loss of employment etc.
  • Conduct graduate assistant, adjunct faculty, faculty, and staff benefit orientations. Facilitate special orientation upon request to include but not limited to:
    • Explain benefit options to employees in benefits and attaining optimal coverage.
    • Receipt of supporting documents for Benefit Life Changes to include employer letters on loss or gain of employment.
  • Review Workday reports that assist with meeting System Employee Administration policies. Work reports to stay in compliance with deadlines and find discrepancies which lead to the correction of benefit events and custom IDs.
  • Review new employee Workday setup and make appropriate changes to custom ID's for correct processing. Provide employee assistance for new hires, benefit life events, and separations.
  • Responsible for summer premium processing for faculty and graduate assistants each year to include but not limited to making necessary changes in Workday changes so that billing, deduction, or cancellation of benefits occur accurately.
  • Responsible for Life Insurance, Dependent Life Insurance, AD&D Coverage, and Long-Term Disability claims. Assist beneficiaries with life insurance policies and enrollment of surviving spouses in benefit coverage. Report death claims to SBA and complete action in the Workday such as termination of benefits.
  • Handle benefit events such as Summer Premiums and Open Enrollment.
  • Responsible for COBRA enforcement for spouses of divorced employees, separations, terminations, and retirement. Assist with COBRA benefit enrollment.
  • Responsible for handling and working system generated reports based on the schedule outlined by system office.

Functional Area 2: Separation / Retirement Activities

Percent Effort: Analyst-30% / Specialist-30%

Job Duties:
  • Responsible for day-to-day separation/retirement activities involving the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), Optional Retirement Programs (ORP), Tax Deferred Accounts (TDA), and Deferred Compensation Plans (DCP).
  • Handle separation and retirement processes to include but not limited to sending out email notifications, discussing separation items, processing paperwork, exit interviews, and process lump sum payments.
  • Explain retirement program options to employees based on eligibility.
  • Obtain appropriate paperwork and electronic task completion to set up retirement programs and deductions.
  • Update Workday IDs to set up appropriate retirement programs as needed.
  • Counsel employees on retirement benefits and attaining optimal coverage to include enrollment in the A&M Care 65 plus and notify employees of eligibility requirements enrollment in Medicare Part A & B. Provide information on both medical plans as well as optional plans. Retiree processing typically starts a year before their retirement date.
  • Obtain supporting documentation for benefit life changes and adding dependents to benefit plans.
  • Assist with separation process, return to retire, updating custom ID's, run necessary business object reports to get percent of local funds.
  • Prepare paver certificates and notify department and division of retiree gift eligibility.

Functional Area 3: Event Planning and Special Projects

Percent Effort: Analyst-30% / Specialist-10%

Job Duties:
  • Responsible for coordinating various benefits and wellness events throughout the fiscal year
  • Coordinate and conduct events such as Open Enrollment, C.L.I.M.B, retire luncheon wellness, and retirement fairs.
  • Promote and foster wellness on campus as the campus Wellness Champion, working with community vendors such as Catapult, Airrosti, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Voya, Corbridge HEB etc. Maintain good business relationships with vendors so that this collaborative effort will benefit our employees and our community.
  • Work with departments and colleges across campus such as Employee Relations, Recreational Sports, and Institutional Advancement to have successful events.
  • Develop e-mail notifications, flyers, social media posts, and special campus announcements for events.
  • Assist in projects such as Summer Premium processing for graduate assistants and adjunct faculty.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Benefits Analyst:
  • Bachelor's Degree in closely related field.
  • Two (2) year of related experience.

Benefits Specialist:
  • Bachelor's Degree in closely related field.
  • Three (3) year of related experience.

Other Skills:
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills to be able to work with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and standard office equipment.
  • Detailed oriented, good time management, and strong organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task are essential.
  • High level of skill in handling sensitive data and maintaining confidential information.
  • Required to complete HIPPA training as a condition of employment within a reasonable time frame after the individual's employment and on an as-needed basis thereafter.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources.
  • PHR or SHRM-CP Certification
  • Experience in HR working with insurance benefits, retirement, event planning, and wellness programs.
  • Experience with Workday.
  • Experience working in FAMIS, Laserfiche, and Single Sign-On Programs
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws impacting employment, i.e., IRCA, COBRA, and HIPAA, etc.

  • $3,708.34 - $4,583.34 monthly ($44,500 - $55,000 annually)

The individual is required to handle PHI in accordance with A&M System policy and is further required to complete HIPAA training as a condition of employment, within a reasonable timeframe after the individual's employment, and on an as-needed basis thereafter.
