Mechanic Supervisor

Department: Facilities Operations - Motor Pool - 410300

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of high school and two years of experience in the performance of the full range of journeyman level tasks associated with automotive or heavy equipment maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Job Functions
  • This position is responsible for management of the auto shop.
  • Supervisory duties include all Performance Management evaluations, work plans, counseling and disciplinary actions.
  • Counsels and advises personnel on correct work procedures and work-related matters.
  • Prioritizes and schedules the work to be done and assigns mechanics to complete required work.
  • This position supervises the work of the mechanics assigned, gives specific instructions as required and also assists with repairs as needed.
  • This position is responsible for the total maintenance and safe operation of heavy equipment, and all motorized equipment used in support of the grounds maintenance and landscaping functions.
  • Supervision of a team that maintains all heavy and off-road equipment, and equipment used in the University’s grounds keeping work. (This equipment consists of mowers, lime spreaders, mortar mixers, sprayers, trailers, weed-eaters, leaf blowers, chain saws, sweepers, etc.)
  • This position is also responsible for the body repair and painting of vehicles in both the rental and service fleets.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
  • Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods of adjusting and repairing the generating, ignition, and electrical wiring systems found in automotive equipment.
  • Skill in the use of the tools and equipment found in automotive & heavy equipment repair garages.
  • Ability to diagnose complex operating defects in automotive and heavy equipment and determine the type and extent of repairs needed.
  • Ability to assign and direct the work of Vehicle & Equipment Repair Technicians.
  • Ability to maintain routine clerical records on the equipment repaired.
  • Ability to operate University owned vehicles with a valid driver’s license.
  • Supervisory skills and experience; This position has 5 direct reports in the auto shop.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications
Prefer a 2-year Technical Degree in a related field; or relevant experience supplemented with National Recognized Standards such as ASE.
Supervisory experience preferred.

Work Schedule/Hours: The normal work schedule is from 7:00am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. However, demands of the normal operating procedures as well as emergency repair needs and heavy use requirements of the equipment during periods of bad weather may require adjustments in the work schedule to accomplish repair work.Designated as MANDATORY, this position is expected to be available for work during University emergencies, holidays, closings and adverse weather conditions.
Anticipated Hiring Range: $43,584 - $50,265
