The Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of African-American and African Diasporic Music, beginning with the 2022–23 academic year.

The Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865, is the nation’s oldest continuously operating conservatory, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent liberal arts college. Students are enrolled in undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Music in performance, jazz studies, composition, electronic and computer music, historical performance, and musicology. Graduate programs leading to the Master of Music in conducting and historical performance are also offered. Oberlin is located 25 miles from a major airport and 40 miles from downtown Cleveland, which has a thriving and diverse music scene.   This is a joint tenure-track faculty appointment in the Conservatory’s Division of Jazz Studies and the Conservatory’s Division of Musicology. The position also plays an integral role, and works closely with colleagues, in the College of Arts & Science’s Department of Africana Studies. The area of research specialization is open, but we seek an interdisciplinary candidate whose research and teaching focuses on musical aspects of the Black experience in a relevant field of study. Examples include, but are not limited to, Jazz Studies, African-American Studies, African Studies, Cultural Studies, Musicology, Ethnomusicology, or Sound Studies.   Responsibilites:
  • Teaching a two-semester introductory course in African-American music, required for all jazz majors; as such, the candidate should have a foundational understanding of jazz history and its relationship to major traditions in Black American music;
  • Teaching other undergraduate courses in African-American and/or African diasporic musics, and other areas related to the candidate’s research specialty;
  • Maintaining a dynamic scholarly research profile, which may also include creative work, public musicology, and/or community engagement;
  • Participation in Musicology and Jazz departmental meetings and affairs;
  • Active engagement and contribution to institutional service, relationships, and development.

Qualifications:

  • PhD or DMA preferred, or equivalent professional experience. Evidence of ongoing scholarly productivity in the candidate’s relevant field of expertise;
  • Experience teaching undergraduate students;
  • Understanding of and commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging that reflect the mission of Oberlin College.

 Review of applications will begin on Monday, October 25th, 2021, and continue until this position is filled. Applications received after that date may be considered until the position is filled.
