Position Summary

Campus Living invites applications for the Trades Specialist – Electrician position. In this role, you will perform journey-level electrician work.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Supervise designated staff in the repair, maintenance, and installation of electrical systems and equipment.
  • Plan, layout and perform electrical work in accordance to applicable code regulations.
  • Test, adjust, calibrate, and maintain a wide variety of control equipment
  • Diagnose trouble in electrical systems or equipment
  • Maintain fire alarm system
  • All related electrical work in assigned area or project

Campus Living, a unit within the division of Student Life, serves to provide the best residential living experience for students at the University at Buffalo. Campus Living offers quality, affordable and desirable campus housing in support of the university’s mission. Campus Living is comprised of 13 residence halls and five apartment complexes accommodating 8,000 residents on the North and South Campuses. Approximately 5,800 students reside in the residence halls and 2,200 students reside in the apartment complexes. Campus Living is comprised of 210 professional and classified staff with a total operating budget of $70m.

Minimum Qualifications

One or more of the following:
  • Four years of full-time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services;
  • Successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two-year electrician training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.




* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
Preferred Qualifications

This position requires traveling within the campus, between campuses and off-campus. A valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS is preferred or the candidate should otherwise demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
