Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 3+ years experience in administering and supporting IT Systems or Infrastructure.
  • 1+ years experience in leading IT projects
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following: Linux Server Administration, VMware Virtualization, Containers, Cloud (AWS or Azure), High Performance Computing
  • Experience managing software development projects


License/Certification Required


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Slurm Workload Manager
  • Experience with Research Computing in higher education
  • RedHat Certified System Administrator / RedHat Certified Engineer


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Information Technology Infrastructure and Systems (ITIS) is one of the branches of Information Technology Services (ITS) at Appalachian State University. The mission of ITIS is to provide the key technologies that form the backbone of IT services for the University. ITIS does this by working closely with all university stakeholders in architecting solutions in an environment that allows our employees to be actively involved in the planning, decision-making, and development of infrastructure and systems.

This position is an IT Research Engineer (Systems Administrator II) for ITIS. IT Engineers form the backbone of ITIS and have multiple roles. This position’s areas of responsibility will range from participating in the architecting and implementation of solutions to the administration of IT systems and services.
Specifically, this position will be primarily responsible for maintaining on-premise and cloud-based research computing infrastructure as well as end-user support. The position will also ensure that software engineering best practices are followed for business continuity.

This position is part of a new group within ITIS called Research Engineering and Support (RES). RES is responsible for overseeing the research computing infrastructure including on-premise and cloud-based high-performance computers; provides end-user support to academic researchers; and provides custom application development for research models.

With this being a newly formed group within ITIS, this position will be key in helping develop the solutions RES provides.

Duties include, but not limited to:
  • Maintenance, patching, software installation, access control, and end-user support for the following research computing systems:
    • Linux systems with the possibility for Windows systems as well
    • On-prem High Performance Computing Cluster
    • Slurm Workload Manager
    • Cloud Resources including VM instances and Machine Learning
    • R-Studio Server
    • Jupyter Notebooks Server
    • Various other VMs and Containerized research applications


  • Oversee student employees in providing end-user support and custom software development
    • Ensure best practices in software engineering and business continuity are followed
    • Keep track of project progress using Jira
    • Document projects and procedures using Confluence and Google Drive
  • Attend on-campus meetings and conferences to promote RES and develop relationships with research faculty helping to ensure needs are met
  • Attend conferences and other professional development opportunities to ensure we are closely aligned with industry trends and standards



Work Schedule/Hours:Mon-Fri, 8:00-5:00pm, with possible after hours and/or weekend work when required.
Suggested Salary Range: $90,000 - $94,000
