The Council on Foreign Relations creates innovative educational resources to equip students and the interested public with the skills, knowledge, and perspective—the global literacy—required to understand the forces, ideas, and institutions that shape our world. These resources include World101, a growing library of multimedia primers explaining the fundamentals of international relations and U.S. foreign policy; Model Diplomacy, a multimedia simulation program that invites participants to role-play in the context of National Security Council and UN Security Council meetings; and Convene the Council, an educational video game created in collaboration with iCivics. CFR Education content comes with an array of teaching resources and activities aimed at middle school, high school, and higher ed instructors and their students. 

Working under the supervision of senior management in the Education Department, the Senior Writer will collaborate with CFR experts and a small editorial team, led by a Content Director, to develop new and update existing multimedia lessons and mini simulations that populate CFR Education’s vast content library. This position is based in CFR’s New York office on a hybrid basis. CFR currently defines hybrid status as working at least three days a week onsite, with Tuesdays and Thursdays considered institutional anchor days where all staff are required to be onsite.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Performing independent, in-depth research to write unbiased, balanced, and accurate text on a variety of international relations topics using a range of sources.
  • Communicating with and interviewing CFR experts on a wide-range of topics.
  • Writing original, visually-driven content in adherence to deadlines set and administered by the Content Director and approved by the Vice President, Education.
  • Conforming to the voice and style of CFR Education and the non-partisan mandate of the Council in creating accessible multimedia resources of a foundational educational nature.
  • Adapting content for other mediums, including newsletters and social media.


  •  4+ years of related experience in a deadline-driven, collaborative environment.
  • Degree in international relations or related field with high academic achievement.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to interact with editors, experts, and senior management.
  • Experience with digital publishing and editorial workflows.
  • Demonstrated interest in international relations and global news.
  • Superior organizational skills, attention to detail, and proofreading skills.
  • Flexible, positive, team-oriented attitude, and ability to independently balance multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Experience as a journalist strongly desired.

Pay Range

$70,000 to $80,000 per year

Pay commensurate with experience and education
