Reporting to the Director of the University Honors Program, this position will partner with the Director to cultivate academic excellence and intellectual community among the approximately 250 students in the University Honors Program.  The Assistant Director exercises leadership in academic and research advising leading to student retention and degree completion.  The Assistant Director takes special responsibility for nurturing a climate in the program that values diversity, manifests inclusion, and practices equity.


Position Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities

Provide leadership for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in Honors, in collaboration with the Director and relevant campus offices and organizations.

Serve as Core Curriculum advisor to all Honors students, including communicating standards and expectations.

Monitor student progress and standing, and share case management with the Director for students requiring exceptional support.

Liaise with the Registrar for course substitutions and other degree audit changes. 

Make data-driven and strategic recommendations to the Director regarding the fostering of positive admission and retention outcomes, including course scheduling that supports student success in Honors.

Support undergraduate research and creative activity by facilitating 2 1-unit sections per semester of the Honors 2000 Research Colloquium, administering student research grants and coordinating thesis completion.    

Serve as primary liaison with the Student Honors Advisory Council (SHAC).  Collaborate with SHAC to organize the annual Honors Summit and co-curricular events throughout the year.

Work in tandem with the Senior Administrative Coordinator on budget, student employment, and other organizational duties. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requisite Qualifications

Typically a Master’s degree or equivalent experience. A Doctoral degree is strongly preferred. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.

Two years of university-level teaching, administrative or student-support experience in a diverse student-centered environment.

Understanding of the nature and value of Honors education at the university level.

Candidate must possess strong research skills and be able to communicate both enthusiasm for research and basic research methods.

Familiarity with literature and practice concerning equity, diversity, and inclusion in the higher education field.

Ability to manage projects, prioritize assignments, and solve problems. Excellent communication, organizational, and collaborative skills.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of student records and financial data Demonstrated computer competency and knowledge of relevant technologies.
