Rhode Island School of Design is looking for a part-time Technical Assistant II to join the Film/Animation/Video department. In this department, students explore the art of the moving image, learning to master the tools needed to articulate a creative vision, whether using film, animation, installations, interactive media, or a combination. The part-time Technical Assistant II manages, tracks, purchases, maintains, and upgrades the digital technology and equipment necessary to operate the Film, Animation & Video department efficiently. The incumbent in this position provides support for basic physical construction needs. and assists students and faculty on digital technology and physical installation; provides technical guidance and advice in support of educational courses and academic projects, and ensures safety and organization of facilities, studios, and environment.

Essential Functions

  • Provide guidance, training, and advice on the use of computers,equipment, and technology in support of the educational process, academic project and/or design. Recommend the most appropriate process and equipment and technology for use by the student given the student’s ability, access level, and class assignment.
  • Coordinate and manage maintenance and upgrades of computer hardware and software.
  • Maintain, organize, and manage studio spaces including, but not limited to Aud 525, animation studios, and open media studios. Assist Technical Assistant III with maintaining equipment storage in each studio space such as the closets and storage spaces in the stop-motion studios, third floor of Market House, Auditorium 502, and storage space in the Cloud Studio.
  • Provide basic building and construction support for studios, the educational process, and academic projects, as needed. This includes maintaining the flats in the Blue and Black studios and providing support for installation art.
  • Order and track supplies and maintain appropriate inventory levels.
  • With guidance and direction from the department head and ITS, track and oversee faculty and staff computer distribution.
  • Suggest/make improvements to or modifications of the facility, equipment, and tools.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of the department budget.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Film, Animation and Video and other college departments, such as ITS and EHS, to develop and implement best practices and report incidents.


Knowledge/Skills/Experience

  • BFA in digital media art and/or animation or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two to four years practical experience in media art, animation, emerging technologies or related field.
  • Experience with the software regularly used in the department, such as the Adobe Suite, AfterEffects, Dragonframe, 3D animation, Logic, and digital file management.
  • Basic construction skills.
  • Experience working in an academic environment is preferred
  • Ability to work cooperatively with and be sensitive to the diverse populations of RISD’s community is essential.
