The Staff Clinician (BIPOC Focus) position will provide individual psychological evaluation, short-term psychotherapy, crisis intervention, referrals and case management to students in psychological/emotional distress. They will also offer longer-term psychotherapy to 1-2 clients each year on an as needed basis. Additionally, this clinician consults with Residence Life and Education, Dean of Students, and other departments on campus regarding psychological emergencies and mental health issues. In this role the staff clinician will provide counseling and outreach to BIPOC students and other historically under- represented students at Emerson College. The staff clinician will also serve as a liaison to the Office of Intercultural Affairs. The staff will participate in all efforts to provide a safe and inclusive environment to students both within the Counseling Center and in the wider Emerson community.

Essential Functions of the Role:

  • Provide individual psychological evaluation, short-term psychotherapy, crisis intervention, referrals, and case management to students with diverse backgrounds and ethnicities who are in psychological/emotional distress.


  • Provide outreach and support to BIPOC students, as well as other historically underrepresented and underserved students including GLB, transgender and nonbinary students, students of diverse socio-economic, racial/ethnic,and international bacgrounds and students with diverse abilities.


  • Supervise one or two practicum graduate students in psychology or social work with full clinical and legal responsibility for their work and documentation; provide training in college mental health issues, intercultural therapy and diversity, and procedures to all Center interns.


  • Provide outreach and programming offerings to the campus community including training of resident assistants, crisis debriefings, and workshops. Consult with campus professionals regarding student mental health, well-being and intercultural awareness.


  • Communicate regularly with center staff on clinical and administrative matters and enhance departmental collaboration and quality of care provided to students by attending scheduled staff and clinical team meetings, case conferences, individual supervision and peer supervision as assigned.


  • Provide emergency daytime coverage for students in acute crisis, triage needs, arrange outside administrative, transport and medical/hospital intervention as needed; consult with involved professionals, college staff, and family or friends when indicated; follow all ethical, legal, and clinical standards of confidentiality.
  • Maintain appropriate clinical records by writing on-going case notes, intake and termination summaries in accordance with Massachusetts state laws.


  • Participate in on-call rotation, responding to after-hours emergencies as needed.


Other Responsibilities:

  • Administrative duties as assigned, which may include coordinating Center's outreach programming, developing a group therapy program, and/or managing in-service training.


  • Participate in external professional associations to maintain and extend clinical knowledge and expertise and to develop and deepen referral networks for students requiring specialized services off-campus; sustain and deepen knowledge base of best current practices in psychology and college mental health with regular educational activities and conference attendance.


Qualifications:
  • Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology (Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.) or Master's in Social Work (LCSW, LICSW); or Licensed Mental Health Provider (LMHC). Licensure must be current in Massachusetts; expertise in intercultural counseling with diverse and historically underrepresented populations; strong clinical skills and a solid background in psychological crisis intervention and management; knowledgeable of psychological trends on college campuses; ability to effectively work with students from a broad range of backgrounds and life experiences; a commitment to diversity and team building; excellent interpersonal skills.


  • 3+ years experience in college mental health or community mental health and supervision.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in supervision with graduate practicum and interns.
  • Good computer skills, fluency in Windows Office Products and Electronic Medical Reports (EMRs).
  • Experience leading therapy groups.

The Salary Range for this position is budgeted for $60,000-$62,500.
