General Description

Under the direction of the Dean, Technology, the Media Specialist will have primary responsibility of operating and maintaining multi-camera systems, audio and video equipment, media/video servers, and providing engineering support for teleconferencing, and distance education classes. Some functions involve computer set-ups for broadcast and/or audio-visual systems.

Job Duties

Job duties of the Media Specialist include:
  • Operate and adjust cameras; adjust studio and field lighting as required; participate in studio set design process.
  • Perform technical duties related to the delivery of live streaming, teleconferences and record video cable-casts and satellite programs for instructional purposes; maintain and set-up teleconferences and record downlink programs according to established schedules.
  • Videotape, on location, college events, programs, and classroom activities; edit, encode and burn to DVD, publish to web and social media environments, label and duplicate finished video projects.
  • Create video projects using applications such as Final Cut Pro, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Record, edit, label and duplicate instructional training videos.
  • Create and maintain video projects.
  • Assists in the designing of new audio/video/broadcast systems, propose changes in existing systems, and arrange the installation/modification of systems/equipment.
  • Operate distance education equipment including codec, camera and room-control devices, sound systems, recording devices and peripheral equipment including document cameras and computers.
  • Provide technical support to the Public Information Office in creating COS promotional and informational media products.
  • Take still photos as required.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as required.
  • Assist as needed with delivery of audio-visual equipment; assist faculty and staff in proper operation of audio-visual equipment.
  • Work from schematics, technical manuals and other related resources to perform repairs; calibrate equipment; perform routine safety inspections.
  • Train and provide work direction to student workers.
  • Utilize the District's integrated software in performing the required duties of the position.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree in electronics, broadcast studies, or related field preferred with two years' experience in Media capture and processing. OR
  • Associate degree in electronics or broadcast studies or related field and three years' experience in Media capture and processing, OR
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in media capture and processing.

  • Ability to lift, carry, push and pull objects up to 40 lbs.

  • Knowledge and Abilities

    Knowledge of:
  • Operation of a variety of equipment related to media production and transmission.
  • Principles and practices of two-way interactive distance education.
  • Methods and procedures of audio-visual equipment operation.
  • Ability to use applicable computerized systems in web casting, including video server technology.
  • Techniques in media capture and processing.
  • Applicable codes and regulations as it pertains to media broadcasting.
  • Record-keeping techniques.
  • Diagramming of existing and newly created circuitry
  • Sound systems and videography techniques
  • Basic office automation computer software.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
  • Ability to:

    • Use computer based nonlinear editing systems such as Final Cut Pro

    • Create DVDs and web deliverable projects.

    • Perform skilled electronic installation, diagnosis and maintenance.

    • Utilize test equipment and materials of the computer/electronics maintenance trade.

    • Perform accurate measurements and calculations.

    • Plan and lay out computer/electronic maintenance work.

    • Work from technical manuals, wiring diagrams, schematics and catalogs.

    • Maintain accurate records.

    • Maintain tools and equipment in a clean working condition/ provide proper security.

    • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

    • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationship with others.
