Job Summary

Reporting to the Vice President of Strategic Communications, the Executive Director of Strategic Communications in the Office of University Marketing & Communications assists the Vice President of Strategic Communications in developing and implementing communication strategies and producing written materials that support these strategies—including University messages, talking points, executive publications, and opinion pieces — to advance Drexel University's reputation through thought leadership and communications. The Executive Director of Strategic Communications will also work closely with the Special Assistant to the President for Strategic Communications.

The Executive Director of Strategic Communications will assist in providing strategic counsel to stakeholders across the University on communications for strategic priorities and will provide support with writing materials and communications plans for special projects. The employee will be expected to have experience in strategic counsel and experience in interacting with and writing for C-suite executives from higher education, political leadership, corporations or foundations. The Executive Director will be responsible for maintaining executive social media profiles and websites. In addition, they will oversee maintaining strategic priority websites.

The Executive Director of Strategic Communications will be responsible for leading the production of high-level executive publications including the President's Annual Report, and other key publications/online reports. In addition, the position will produce a new, regular presidential column that will be distributed on a regular basis to the Drexel community.

This position will work closely with Special Assistant to the President for Strategic Communications and the Executive Director of News & Media Relations in developing and implementing communications strategies that encompass leadership positioning. The Executive Director of Strategic Communications will support the Special Assistant to the President for Strategic Communications in drafting executive messages and opinion pieces. Remaining current and relevant on issues and trends affecting higher education is required.

The position also requires a deep understanding of and experience in aligning messages within organizations, with specific channels, in various stages, and experience in predicting expected outcomes. A modern storytelling approach and experience in writing scripts for video and helping to prepare executives for podcasts is preferred.

Additional duties include:
• Assisting with researching, writing and editing messages, presentations, talking points and opinion pieces.
• Overseeing the development (by University Marketing & Communications) and working with the Special Assistant to the President on the distribution of special messages to university constituents, including trustees.
• Closely monitoring higher education-related issues and the competitive landscape to adjust University positioning and messaging as required.
• Closely monitoring current events in Philadelphia that can impact the University community and drafting messages as appropriate.
• Be available 24/7 to provide writing support for sensitive issues that may occur at night or on weekends.

The position requires excellent project management/organization leadership skills, the acumen to handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously mixing long-term projects with the urgency of immediate demands; the agility and inclination to advance complex projects and solve problems collaboratively.

Essential Functions

  • Assisting with researching, writing and editing University messages, presentations, talking points and opinion pieces.
  • Providing strategic counsel to stakeholders across the University on communications for strategic priorities and provide support with writing materials and communications plans for special projects.
  • Be responsible for leading the production of high-level executive publications including the President's Annual Report, and other key publications/online reports.

Required Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications or related field is required.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience is required.
  • The employee will be expected to have experience in strategic counsel and experience in interacting with and writing for C-suite executives from higher education, political leadership, corporations or foundations.
  • The position requires excellent project management/organization leadership skills, the acumen to handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously mixing long-term projects with the urgency of immediate demands; the agility and inclination to advance complex projects and solve problems collaboratively.
  • The position also requires a deep understanding of and experience in aligning messages within organizations, with specific channels.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A master’s degree is preferred.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including expertise writing in the “voice” of executive leaders.
  • Experience supporting leadership-positioning strategies.
  • Adaptability and resourceful navigation of a matrixed and often ambiguous work environment and ability to handle competing priorities and timelines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work with individuals and groups at all levels of the University.
  • Experience working with modern storytelling channels, such as social media, video and podcasts.
  • A quick and motivated learner with the ability to connect seemingly unrelated information and ideas.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Additional Information

This position is classified as Exempt, and grade N. Compensation for this grade ranges from $90,430.00 to $135,640.00 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
