Position Summary:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration, the Controller is responsible for the technical accounting functions of the university including maintaining the general ledger and chart of accounts, internal controls, accounts payable/receivable, cash management and procurement. The Controller provides day-to-day leadership of a team of financial professionals. Additionally, the Controller represents the institution on finance-related administrative matters, establishes and maintains a consultative and collaborative working relationship with institutional units, and guides the development of strategy, processes, and policies to ensure accuracy and compliance in the institution's accounting functions.

Responsibilities
  • Reconciles and maintains the general ledger and chart of accounts
  • Directs the maintenance, monitoring and preparation of university-wide financial records and reports and disseminates information to the appropriate stakeholders
  • Develops, implements, maintains, and monitors finance-related institutional policies, internal controls, and accounting standards.
  • Serves as the unit liaison and consultant among internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing the interests of the unit
  • Performs financial analyses, accounting and finance procedures in accordance with established best practices, policies and procedures, and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Has supervisory responsibility for the staff and functions within Purchasing/Contracts, Accounts Payable/Receivable, General Accounting and Grants Accounting, and Student Financials.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Masters Degree in Business Administration or related area of study
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years of direct, operational experience in each of the following functions: maintaining the general ledger; ensuring internal controls; and overseeing accounts payable and cash management.
  • Thorough working knowledge and application of GAAP and GAAS
  • Ability to exercise discretion in all matters and adhere to applicable policy and legal constraints
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Preferred:
  • Certified Public Accountant certificate highly preferred
  • Experience with PeopleSoft ERP or equivalent
  • Experience in Universities of Wisconsin financial systems and software applications
