Position Purpose:

The Graduate Advisor promotes student learning by providing academic advising and student mentoring. The Graduate Advisor advises graduate students through their degree program, maintains accurate and comprehensive advising records, and helps to orient new students to the university. The Graduate Advisor works closely with university departments and Scott Center staff to provide comprehensive services to students.

This position is eligible for remote work with expectations for on-campus participation in meetings, events, and as requested by the Scott Center and other departments.

  • Essential Job Functions:

  • Provides comprehensive and accurate academic advising to graduate students, both in person and in virtual environments. This includes regularly communicating with advisees regarding their academic progress and supporting them in addressing holds, degree audits, course additions/substitutions/withdrawals, petitions, and academic warnings.
  • Teaches students how to use AU systems advantageously (e.g. Student Planner, Okta, Moodle, and Outlook).
  • Provides accurate and timely information on available educational resources and support services on and off campus, and collaborates effectively with the teams providing these services.
  • Supports the recruitment of students by participating in open houses and other admission events as needed.
  • Collaborates with campus colleagues to ensure knowledge of current policies and pending changes.

  • Essential Job Requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred.
    • 3-5 years of experience in higher education advising.
    • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
    • Ability to handle and act upon confidential information.
    • Ability to interact and communicate with a diverse group of student, staff, faculty and to develop strong working relationships with colleagues, staff, students, and the general public. Flexibility with an evolving work environment.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft systems; knowledge of Colleague, Slate, and Informer preferred. Ability to occasionally work evening and weekend hours.
    Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to move about campus.
    • Ability to interact via telephone, in person, and via electronic media.
