Job Description 

The Comptroller at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) oversees and manages the accounting services and business operations.  Demonstrated customer service, analytical, conflict resolution and effective communication skills are essential attributes to this position.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance, the Comptroller directs the accounting functions of the University and serves as the key advisor to the Vice President for Administration & Finance on financial matters. Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, development and support of business office staff, general accounting, billing/accounts receivable, accounts payable, travel, purchasing, bursar operations, grants, cost/asset accounting, payroll, and grant accounting and sponsored projects management.  This position is responsible for the preparation of all financial statements and all financial reporting activities.  This includes the administration of fiscal responsibility for externally-funded research, service and training grants and contracts accepted by SUNO.  Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations and generally accepted accounting principles with experience in governmental accounting and practices is necessary.  This position develops policies and procedures to ensure sound accounting practices to foster a system of strong internal accounting controls.  Serves as the primary point of contact for internal and external audits.

  1. Maintains oversight responsibility for general accounting data; including cash accountability, payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger and fixed assets.
  2. Prepares or supervises the preparation of financial reports to external agencies (i.e. Southern University System, Board of Regents, etc.) including financially related surveys and cost reporting for SUNO, Southern University System Office, state, and federal agencies. Serves as liaison between SUNO and Louisiana Attorney general for debt collection.
  3. Performs special financial analysis and prepares related reports as requested by the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance.
  4. Evaluates financial accounting systems, policies and procedures assisting in development of revisions needed.
  5. Oversees general ledger transactions, reconciliations, disbursements.
  6. Provides internal/external training of business staff on accounting systems, developing written procedures and practices.
  7. Responsible for administration of funding and accounting for federal, state and private grants.
  8. Coordinates internal and external audits of University and federal programs, including scheduling and provision of necessary support requirements and arrangements.
  9. Reviews student accounts and authorizes refunds in instances of overpayments.
  10. Prepares the budget request for the business office and monitors the approved budget.
  11. 1Other duties as assigned.


  • Knowledge of GAAP and GASB changes.
  • Knowledge of Southern University System (SUS), Board of Regents, State of Louisiana and Federals laws, policies, and procedures pertaining to the operation of public universities, non-profits business entities and sponsored research and grants management.
  • Abilities to establish goals, structures and processes which align with the institution’s long-term strategic plan and vision and short-term priorities.
  • Leadership, coaching and teambuilding skills to strengthen and cultivate relations with the Comptroller’s staff and SUNO colleagues.
  • Effective operational, management and analytical skills and the ability to problem solve and make sound recommendations.
  • Proven applicable experience working in and extracting data from an Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) system, business analytics or other relevant system application or software.
  • The ability to influence and lead others outside of reporting lines to achieve common goals and deadlines.
  • The ability to provide clear and concise analysis and summaries of financial data, respond effectively to questions and prepare material in response to inquiries.
  • The ability to perform professionally employing inherent customer services strategies, exercising judgment, discretion, confidentiality and leading by example.

Required education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or related discipline.
  • Seven years related accounting experience, with five years of progressive management and direct supervision. 
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, analytically and to apply financial tools in the analysis of data is essential. 
  • Strong oral/written skills and the ability to perform with a high degree of diplomacy, confidentiality and professionalism are required.

Preferred education and experience

  • Certified Public Accountant or MBA.
  • Five years of progressive fiscal responsibility in higher education. 
  • Experience with BANNER financial modules is a plus.
