About this Opportunity

The Ball State University School of Music invites applications for a tenure-line Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology and Musicology position beginning August 2024.

The successful candidate will contribute to the diverse curricula of the School of Music undergraduate, graduate and non-major courses through teaching existing ethnomusicology/world music courses and a range of courses in the western classical tradition. They will introduce a global perspective to popular, rock, and classical courses; advise masters and doctoral students; and undertake service obligations as assigned. All faculty in the College of Fine Arts are expected to be productive scholars. The ideal candidate should foster teaching practices that align with the mission and strategic plans of the university, college, and department. Applicants should also be committed to inclusive pedagogies in their teaching, scholarship, and artistry.

Salary and benefit packages for this position are competitive, with salaries for this opportunity beginning at $53,000 annually.

Description
  • The instructional load will be four 3cr courses per semester, comprising a combination of undergraduate courses in the music history sequence, required and elective graduate courses, and non-major courses.
  • These courses will include Gateway to Music History, World Music (for majors and non-majors), Ethnomusicology (graduate), Bibliography and Methodology, Graduate Music History Review. Courses in 18th-21st century classical music, popular music, and rock will be assigned based on area needs and the the expertise of the hired faculty .
  • Collaborate with music history faculty to bring a global perspective to all area courses
  • Foster student appreciation of diversity and inclusion
  • Cultivate student success and excellence
  • Mentor indepent studies, and supervise masters and doctoral papers
  • Participate and lead masters and doctoral exam committees
  • Contribute to the assessment of the area’s 6 UCC course
  • Carry out a research program that includes conference presentations and publications in referred outlets.
  • Serve on area, school, and university level committees, and professional committees at the regional or national level.
  • Provide leadership in the School’s Inclusive Excellence committee, outreach, and other IE efforts.

Our dynamic faculty function as collaborative, innovative, inclusive, and adaptive members of the College of Fine Arts community, both within and beyond the home unit, serving as quality teachers, productive in creative and/or scholarly work, engaged in public service activities, and contributing to the Ball State and Muncie communities and beyond. Additionally, lifelong learning at Ball State University extends educational engagement beyond the classroom and includes learning for professional development, personal enrichment, or other goals throughout one’s lifetime. Faculty will be expected to participate in the department’s, college’s, and university’s lifelong learning opportunities when available and may be assigned teaching responsibility in this area as part of their overall responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • An earned doctorate in ethnomusicology or a doctrate in musicology with a minor in ethnomusicology from an accredited, PhD-granting institution by June 1, 2024.
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching
  • Demonstrated potential for significant research
Authorization to work in the US

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one-year full time college teaching world and classical musics to music majors and non-majors.
  • Preferred specialty in Latin American, Asian, and African music
