The Director/Chair of the Aviation and Safety Department shall have the primary responsibility of providing visionary leadership, possess strong academic credentials, and exhibit expertise in aviation-related fields such as Flight Education, Aviation-Airport Management, and/or Air Traffic Control (ATC). This role requires a dedicated professional with a proven track record in accreditation, program development, and a passion for fostering excellence in aviation education. This position shall report to the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences.

Essential Functions
  • Provide visionary leadership to the Aviation and Safety Department, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the department, including budget management, faculty supervision, and student engagement.
  • Ensure the highest standards of academic quality within the department's programs.
  • Facilitate curriculum development and review to align with industry trends and best practices.
  • Mentor and support faculty in their teaching and research endeavors.
  • Lead the department's efforts to maintain and enhance accreditation standards, ensuring compliance with relevant accrediting bodies.
  • Guide the preparation and submission of accreditation documents and reports.
  • Spearhead the development of new aviation programs or the expansion of existing ones to meet the evolving needs of the aviation industry.
  • Collaborate with industry partners to create experiential learning opportunities for students.
  • Promote student success by implementing strategies to enhance retention, graduation rates, and career placement.
  • Establish mentoring and advising programs to support student academic and professional development.
  • Foster strong relationships with aviation industry stakeholders, government agencies, and community organizations to enhance the department's visibility and partnerships.
  • Encourage and support faculty and student research in aviation-related fields.
  • Promote the dissemination of research findings through publications and presentations.
  • Develop and execute strategies for grant writing and fundraising activities to secure additional resources for the department's initiatives and projects.
  • Collaborate with university development and advancement teams to identify funding opportunities and engage with potential donors.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or deemed appropriate to the accomplishments of the responsibilities and functions of the Aviation and Safety Department. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the department head from assigning tasks that logically relate to the position.

  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Minimum Requirements
  • A Ph.D. or a Master's degree in an aviation-related field, such as Flight Education, Aviation-Airport Management, or Air Traffic Control (ATC).
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with a track record of successful academic administration.
  • Experience with accreditation processes and standards in higher education.
  • Proven experience in program development and curriculum design.
  • An understanding of current trends and challenges in the aviation industry.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to identify and pursue opportunities for departmental growth and success.
  • Ability to write and secure grants, as well as participate in fundraising activities.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule that may include working nights and weekends (if applicable).
