Creighton University seeks nominations for and expressions of interest in the position of University Librarian. Reporting to the provost, the University Librarian is expected to lead the libraries in their mission to provide information resources and services of the highest quality for the University’s teaching, research, professional, and performance programs; foster internal and external partnerships and collaborations; collaborate with communities of scholars on and off campus; recruit and nurture a diverse, professional staff; and garner and manage resources toward strategic goals.

Creighton, located in Omaha, NE, offers a top-ranked education, rooted in the Jesuit tradition, for students and scholars to make a meaningful impact on the world. Founded in 1878, Creighton is one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the U.S. and is committed to providing students, faculty, and staff with top-tier education, resources, and opportunities to foster a supportive community committed to Jesuit and Catholic values and traditions. Creighton prides itself on fostering a community where students learn to become leaders through service to others.

Creighton University offers degree programs among eight schools and colleges.  Known for their disciplinary excellence, programs are further augmented by the intentionality of interdisciplinary efforts that link arts and sciences with law, business, and health science programs in dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, occupational and physical therapy, physician assistant, public health and emergency medical services.

The current leader of Creighton, Reverend Daniel S. Hendrickson, S.J., Ph.D., became the 25th president of the university in 2015. During Hendrickson’s tenure, Creighton has seen enrollment grow to more than 8,700 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students; achieved greater national recognition; and opened a $100 million health sciences campus in Phoenix, making it one of the largest Catholic health professions educators in the U.S. Creighton has also achieved recognition for undergraduate teaching, research, and internship opportunities

Mardell Wilson, EdD, RDN joined the university as provost in the fall of 2020. Wilson previously served as professor and dean of the Edward and Margaret Doisy College of Health Sciences at Saint Louis University (SLU). With her background in the allied health professions and in her role as dean of the health sciences college at SLU, Dr. Wilson collaborated with deans and faculty across the university’s schools and colleges, developed a five-year research plan, a peer-reviewed publication support program, and the foundation for an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program, among other initiatives.  In her time at Creighton she has supported continued growth, in partnership with President Hendrickson, across the university’s programs and research portfolio.

Creighton Libraries and University Librarian

Creighton’s libraries serve as a key resource for the university, supporting its mission by providing innovative resources, services, and spaces for teaching and learning.  The underpinnings of this work are reflected in the libraries’ core values: foster a culture of mutual respect, cooperation, and understanding; provide equitable access to resources and services for the benefit of a diverse community; promote a culture that strives for excellence and growth through continuous improvement; contribute to the advancement of social responsibility in the community and throughout the world; empower open inquiry and experimentation to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration and scholarship; and, nurture critical thinkers to become knowledge builder and active problem solvers.

Given the central importance of the libraries to the mission of Creighton, they were a key area of focus of investment on campus in the past year.  The Reinart Alumni Memorial Library was renovated and refreshed in the summer of 2023 during a process that included the renovation of the St. John’s fountain and its patio, and the remodeling of the V.J. and Angela Skutt Student Center, both of which are adjacent to the Reinert Alumni Memorial Library.  These projects occurred in tandem with several new construction projects in student housing, a Jesuit residence, and center for health sciences education.

The Creighton libraries currently consist of:

Reinert Alumni Memorial Library

As the main library on the Omaha campus, Reinert-Alumni Memorial Library’s mission is to       support and engage faculty and students in the educational and research activities of the         Creighton community. The library is dedicated to focusing energy and resources on becoming an      integral part of the campus community. The library contains over one million items, including                physical and electronic books, journals, media, models, and other equipment. Within the library,    the Creighton University Archives collects, maintains and provides access to collections that            appeal to a variety of researchers: archival holdings related to the history of Creighton; rare books and other valuable print materials; and special collections from literature, health, art,    religion and other fields. Digital surrogates of selected files are available for viewing on the       Creighton Digital Repository.

Phoenix Health Sciences Library

The Phoenix Health Sciences library serves the Phoenix campus and provides students and faculty with the necessary resources to conduct educational and research activities.  It also serves as a critical resource to connect students and faculty to the Omaha campus library and ensure their equitable access to materials, with the goal of centralizing services to improve user experience and reduce complexity.

The University Librarian reports to the provost and serves as a key member of Creighton’s leadership team.  They will be expected to act as a collaborator with the deans across the institution, as well as a strategic partner as academic units undertake new academic endeavors.

Candidates must possess expertise in the field of library/information science; a record of setting and achieving strategic goals; a proven record of effectively leading individuals and managing resources; and an uncompromising commitment to academic excellence and to the creation and support of a vibrant and broadly diverse community of faculty, students, alumni, and community members. A MLS degree is required.
