SUNY Broome Community College is a public, comprehensive community college supervised by the State University of New York, sponsored by the County of Broome, and governed by a Board of Trustees. 

The Faculty-Student Association (F-SA) is a financially self-supporting corporation designed to provide a variety of auxiliary services and financial assistance for the benefit of the College community.  The goal of the F-SA is to provide the very best auxiliary services and comprehensive financial support possible.

THE B.C. CENTER MISSION

The B.C. Center strives to provide affordable and accessible, high quality child care for the children of SUNY Broome students, SUNY Broome staff, as well as children from the surrounding community.  As part of an institution of higher education that seeks to achieve excellence in both teaching and learning, The B.C. Center serves as a host school by offering field experience opportunities to students in the SUNY Broome Early Childhood/Teacher Education Department.

POSITION GOAL 

The goal of an Assistant Director is to effectively perform the responsibilities associated with the position.  In doing so, The B. C. Center and the F-SA will be better prepared to fulfill their operational goals.

Job Description:

STAFFING SUPPORT & SUPERVISION

  • Oversee daily staffing schedules to ensure that bathroom breaks and lunch breaks are covered; fill in as needed when teachers are absent and substitutes are not available
  • Provide guidance and feedback to staff on the development of curriculum and teacher-child interactions that is based on developmentally appropriate practices
  • Assist with identifying and acquiring resources needed for curriculum implementation
  • Utilize portions of the ITERS-3 and ECERS-3 to assess classroom quality and provide feedback to staff about areas of strength and opportunities for improvement
  • Monitor classrooms for compliance with all New York State OCFS Child Day Care Regulations and communicate with staff when changes need to be made
  • Monitor the inventory of classroom equipment and supplies throughout the year; create purchasing lists for director
  • Clean and organize supply sheds throughout the year; help teachers return materials to their proper place after use
  • At the start of each academic year, create signs and labels for each classroom as needed, including nametags for children's cubbies and storage bins
  • Assist as needed in classrooms or in kitchen
  • Fill in as acting director as needed in director's absence

ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT

  • Answer phones; greet visitors/students at the door and direct them to the appropriate classroom
  • Participate in staff meetings, center activities and on-going professional development opportunities as directed, including those that take place after hours
  • Organize special activities and events including those related to curriculum themes (dental health month, fire safety, Dr. Seuss week, Earth Day).
  • Plan special activities and events associated with the Week of the Young Child
  • Send parent billing reminders on a bi-weekly basis; keep track of payment activity
  • Coordinate billing for New York State's Child Care Assistance Program through Broome, Tioga and Tompkins counties; keep track of payment amounts and follow-up on any discrepancies
  • Supply families with end-of-the-year tax information
  • Coordinate with SUNY Broome Public Safety Office to conduct monthly fire drills; maintain tracking log in accordance with OCFS regulations
  • Monitor children's immunizations to ensure compliance; follow up with families as needed
  • Submit immunization records to NYSDOH on an annual basis using dedicated portal

INTERACTIONS WITH FAMILIES

  • Schedule new child interviews and family-teacher conferences
  • Collect child enrollment materials and follow up with families when documents are missing or incomplete; update enrollment forms when necessary
  • Create monthly newsletters for each classroom based on teacher lesson plans
  • Research and disseminate information related to topics important to families (i.e., biting, toilet training, setting limits)
  • Distribute Scholastic book flyers to families bi-monthly, submit orders using the online portal and purchase books for the center using accumulated points
  • Plan bulletin board content based on relevant activities taking place during the year; update bulletin board on a monthly basis

Requirements:

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A strong understanding of New York State OCFS Child Day Care Regulations
  • The ability to identify and apply principles of developmentally appropriate practices in infant, toddler and preschool learning environments
  • A working knowledge of QUALITYstarsNY indicators and standards
  • Familiarity with ITERS-3 and ECERS-3
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Willingness to take initiative and work as a member of a team
  • Effective and respectful communication skills, oral and written
  • A commitment to creating high quality early learning environments for the children and families utilizing our program

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequently lifting, carrying, and holding young children
  • Continuous stooping, bending, and sitting
  • Quickly responding to unexpected physical circumstances
  • Depending on staffing needs, lengthy periods of working on one's feet; standing and walking
  • Asking for assistance to perform physical demands if necessary to prevent injury (i.e., lifting heavy furniture or equipment)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A.      Minimum 1 year of professional full-time teaching experience in OCFS regulated infant, toddler and preschool learning environments; AND

B.      Minimum 1 year of supervisory experience in an OCFS regulated early childhood setting; AND

C.      Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree or higher in Early Childhood, Child Development, or a closely related discipline
