TITLE: Extension (75%) and Research (25%) Associate - Aquaculture 
DEPARTMENT: School of Aquaculture and Aquatic Science, Kentucky State University College of Agriculture, Community, and the Sciences 
Assisting the State Extension Specialist for Aquaculture to develop, conduct, and deliver aquaculture research-based Extension educational programs and to help in research projects including data collection, graduate student mentoring, and publication writing. 
 The successful applicant will support the mission of the State Extension Specialist for Aquaculture including work in the aquaculture disease diagnostic laboratory, farm and home visits, on-farm demonstrations, and writing educational materials. He/she will provide technical advice, assistance and educational programs for clients and County Extension professionals throughout Kentucky. The Extension Assistant/Associate will write research-based articles and publications to educate clients in various areas of aquaculture and will oversee research projects (including those performed by graduate students) in data collection and publication preparation.  
The successful candidate will work in the aquaculture disease diagnostic laboratory, make farm and home visits, set up and conduct on-farm demonstrations, and write educational materials. He/she will provide research-based advice and recommendations to residents of Kentucky and surrounding states and to Extension professionals in the University of Kentucky/Kentucky State University Land Grant System. The Extension Assistant/Associate will also write research-based articles and publications to educate clients in various areas of aquaculture. Primary research functions will involve working with and mentoring graduate students on their thesis research projects. A preferred job function (but not essential) is to contribute to the incorporation of artificial intelligence / machine learning capabilities into the Mobile Responsive Clinical Fish Health Database currently used by the KSU Fish Disease Diagnostic Laboratory with the objective of recognizing and predicting disease occurrence in fish populations. 
Master of Science degree (preferred) in aquaculture or a closely related field is required. 

  • Knowledge, skills and abilities in production of fish and other aquatic organisms will be needed as well as some knowledge of microbiology laboratory skills
  • Knowledge of research techniques, methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of data interpretation and analysis methods and techniques, preferably including a knowledge of incorporating and using a.i./machine learning in a database. 
  • Knowledge of industry and government standards regarding laboratory techniques and safe handling of hazardous materials.     
  • Knowledge of data presentation and organization methods and techniques.  
  • Ability to understand and write highly technical information and to do literature reviews. 
  • Ability to interpret experimental data accurately. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 
  • Ability to maintain concise and accurate records. 
  • Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment. 
  • Ability to perform experiments. 
  • Ability to set up laboratory experiments. 
  • Ability to work within the guidelines of specific projects to gather and interpret experimental data.  



This position has no supervisory responsibilities
